Description	:	Lester Brehmer, the son of Frank and Caroline "Lena" Johanna (Pieken) Brehmer was born on October 5, 1913 in Washington Township, Cass County west of Atlantic, Iowa. He grew to adulthood on the family farm with his three brothers, Ralph, Max and Donald. Les attended country school at Washington #2 which was also known as Grant #2 or Grulke School. Read More	Lester Brehmer, the son of Frank and Caroline "Lena" Johanna (Pieken) Brehmer was born on October 5, 1913 in Washington Township, Cass County west of Atlantic, Iowa. He grew to adulthood on the family farm with his three brothers, Ralph, Max and Donald. Les attended country school at Washington #2 which was also known as Grant #2 or Grulke School. He worked on the family farm and when farm work was slow, Les worked at highway construction. On September 3, 1939 Les was united in marriage to Violet Hansen of Brayton in the Peace Church Parsonage in Walnut, Iowa.. Two sons were born to this union, Delbert (1942) and Gerald( (1946). After their marriage the first home they rented was across the road from 131 Umbrella Rd, it was not well insulated and had no electricity or running water. (Electricity did not come until 1949-1950) then they rented a farm in Lincoln Township from Albert Sievers for 2 years; then Henry "Punk" Kahl for 1 year (1944) location east off M47 at Gross's corner (west of the Pole Barn).. They moved to the Art Kock farm north of Walnut in 1945 and lived there until 1972 making it their home. They purchased a farm in Lincoln Township in 1951 and in late 1960 purchased a farm in Clay Township, Shelby Co., but did not move there.. They continued to rent Art Kock's farm in Clay. In 1972 they retired and moved into 400 Park Street, Walnut, Iowa. As with many start up farmers in that era, Les started farming with horses, not tractors.. Les and Vi had made their livelihood raising crops of corn, oats, hay which they fed to their hogs and cattle. They also raised chickens and sold the eggs for cash or put-on-account at the General Store in Marne for staples. They had a few milk cows. During the 50th's Les also sold Lester Pfister seed corn for 5 to 6 years and won a trip to Soldier Field in Chicago. He was a 4-H leader for Brighton Bobcats while the boys were growing up. Also very active in church being a council member and council president for Peace United Church of Christ in Walnut, Iowa. Lester passed away on February 10, 2004 at the Atlantic Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Atlantic, Iowa having attained the age of ninety years, four months and five days. In addition to his son, Gerald and parents, Les was preceded in death by his brothers, Ralph, Max and Donald. Survivors include his wife Violet of Walnut, Iowa; his son Delbert (Judy) Brehmer of Council Bluffs, Iowa; two grandchildren Jay (Carol) Brehmer of Overland Park, KS; Jeff (Suzi) Brehmer of Carter Lake, Iowa; five great grandchildren: Jordan and Justin Brehmer, Jordan Shaw, Bailey Shaw and Grant Brehmer; other relatives and many friends. Funeral Services were held on February 13, 2004 at Peace United Church of Christ in Walnut, Iowa with Orris Drake officiating. Jeff Krueger was the solist, accompanied by Keralyn Whyte. Casket Bearers were Richard Behrend, Jeffrey Brehmer, Lary Lay, Mel Gross, Jay Brehmer and David Scribner. Interment was in the Layton Township Cemetery, Walnut, Pottawattamie, Iowa, USA
