"Les" Barnhart, 74, died early Sunday morning, March 30, 1986, in Central Washington Hospital during an extended illness. He was born to Jesse and May Barnhart on May 12, 1911, at East Wenatchee and attended schools in East Wenatchee and Wenatchee. He went to work for Western Union as a messenger in 1925. The following year he advanced to the position of clerk and also attended business college and in 1928 he became a simplex (telegraph) operator. He married Cassie Carlock March 17, 1936, at Wenatchee. Mr. Barnhart became a manager for Postal Telegraph in 1940 and following its merger with Western Union in 1943, he became a manager for Western Union in various cities throughout Montana, Oregon and Washington. He became a district manager in 1951 and a supervisor in 1964. At the time of his retirement in 1975, after 50 years of service, he was the Pacific Northwest area manager of operations for Western Union. Following his retirement, Mr. and Mrs. Barnhart moved to Leavenworth, then to Cashmere and to East Wenatchee in 1984. They recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Mr. Barnhart was a member of the Leavenworth Community United Methodist Church, Chumstick Grange No. 819, Retired Western Union Employees, Morse Telegraph Club and the American Association of Retired Persons. He had been a charter member of the Pasco Elks and a past member of Kiwanis. Survivors include his wife, Cassie, at home; one son, Donald Barnhart, Seattle; one daughter, Mrs. John (Judy) Turner, Salinas, Calif.; his mother, May Barnhart, Wenatchee; five brothers, Pete, Kenneth and Jim Barnhart, all of Wenatchee, George Barnhart, East Wenatchee, and Wilbur Barnhart, Hesperia, Calif.; one sister, Mrs. Elva Smeltzer, Walla Walla; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, two brothers and one sister. Telford's Chapel of the Valley is in charge of arrangements. Memorial services will be held at the Leavenworth Community United Methodist Church Thursday at 12 noon with the Rev. Piula Ala'illma officiating. Services will conclude at the church. Memorials may be made to the Leavenworth Community United Methodist Church or to Alpine Boys' Ranch. Arrangements are by Telford's Chapel of the Valley. Obit contributed by Ed Barnhart
