He was born July 13, 1936, near Floris to Beryl A. and Alice Schafer Fite. He married Collene Coleman Aug. 4, 1957, in Davenport, Wash. He graduated from Cardinal High School and served his country in the U.S. Air Force from 1953 to 1957. He farmed the family farm and worked at John Deere Ottumwa Works for 30 years, retiring Oct. 31, 1996. He was a member of United Auto Workers Union and a trustee of Bethlehem Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, a son, Jeffrey of Ottumwa; three daughters, Janean Funk of Bloomfield, Cynthia Yakle of Wapello and Brenda Gatlin of New London; 11 grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; his mother of Cedar Rapids; two sisters, Loins Laughlin of Eldon and Joyce Vaughn of Cedar Rapids. He was preceded in death by his father; and a son, Jay. The body has been cremated. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Douds, the Rev. David Albert officiating. Burial will be in Bethlehem Cemetery in rural Floris. No visitation is planned but friends may call the family at home. Memorials may be made to the family and left at the funeral home or mailed to the address above.
