Wiebesiek was born Nov. 2, 1916 on a farm near Davis, the youngest of five children born to Henry and Minnie (Strasser) Wiebesiek. He attended rural school in Middleton Township. Wiebesiek, 84, of Davis, SD, who died Friday, May 25, 2001 at his home from leukemia. Lester L. Wiebesiek was born Nov. 2, 1916 on a farm near Davis, the youngest of five children born to Henry and Minnie (Strasser) Wiebesiek. He attended rural school in Middleton Township. At age nine, after the death of his father, Lester and his brothers helped their mother on the farm until he was inducted into the service on Dec. 2, 1941. He trained with an anit-aircraft coast artillery at Camp Callon, CA. He was sent to the Aleutian Islands and saw his first action at Dutch Harbor when the Japanese made a surprise raid in June of 1942. After spending two years there, Lester returned to the States for more training and then embarked for the European Theatre of Operations. His outfit was the first anti-aircraft group to cross the Rhine. He received an honorable discharge in Sep. 1945. On Jan. 27, 1948 he was united in marriage to Alene Bunger at her Mothers home in Davis. They farmed near Davis for 37 years until moving into town in 1985. Lester continued to do some work on the farm and had a special love for gardening. Preceding him in death were his parents; a sister, Emma Jones; two brothers, David and Henry "Bud" Wiebesiek; four brothers-in-law, and one infant granddaughter. Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Alene; three sons: Larry, Mankato, MN; Harlan and his wife, Fae, Darwin and his wife, Susan, all of Davis; eight grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; one sister: Jennie Menninga; sisters-in-law: Lyla Wiebesiek, Effie Wiebesiek, Tena Bunger, Martha Bunger, Jeanette Bunger.
