Born June 21, 1914 to Dorathea Margarett (Arps) and Wilhelm Peter Johann Brandt on a farm outside Scotland, South Dakota and raised in Fremont, NE by his widowed mother, with his two older brothers. Graduated Fremont High School and attended Midland Lutheran College where he studied accounting & business. He is survived by his daughters, Loretta Minn of Fisherville, Kentucky, Janice Brandt of Fremont, CA and Leslie Brandt of Oakland, CA; his grandson, Edward Michael Brandt Minn; son-in-law, Edward Minn and daughter-in-law Roxanne Kellam. Sister and brother in law, Ann and James Dunsford, niece Linda Jurgens, nephew Robert Dunsford. He was preceded in death by his wives Sally Hodgkins Wright in 2000 and Joy Faulkner in 1963, his son Lester M. Brandt II, his brothers Archie and Orville Brandt. Les was a fair, considerate and principled man. He was a person of great spirit and optimism and had typical midwestern values of hard work and determination which he shared with his family and friends. His career included: plant manager for Safeway Stores, regional manager for Tea Garden Products, owner of Gorman Lumber & Steamship Lines/Pacific Tank & Pipe in Alameda during the 1940's, Fremont (NE) Molasses and Feed Co and worked for O.P. Skaggs grocery, Fremont, NE. During his high school and college years, he was the paymaster of the 138th Motor Transport Division of the Nebraska National Guard, lettered in track, tennis, basketball, baseball and football and sang in musicals. He was Nebraska State pole vault champion. Northern California Left Handed Golf Champian, 1956. He played tennis twice weekly for 36 years with his Fremont cronies. He had a passion for the Sierra Nevada, backpacking the Tahoe-Yosemite and John Muir Trails, cross country skiing and photographing the mountains. He loved exotic travel, sports, gardening, cribbage, canasta, stamp and coin collecting, animals of all types, chocolate and ice cream. Friends are invited to attend the memorial service 7 pm, Tuesday July 30, 2002 at St. James Episcopal Church, Thornton Ave. at 37051 Cabrillo Terrace, P.O. Box 457 Fremont, CA 510-797-1492.
