He suffered a heart attack the previous Sunday. Lewis D. Smith was born December 25, 1866 at Imlay City, Lapeer county, Michigan, and died at Creighton, Nebraska on December 5, 1940, at the age of 73 years, 11 months, and 10 days. His marriage to Nellie Wood at Denison, Crawford co., Iowa, occurred on March 29, 1893. This union was blessed with seven children, all of whom are living. They moved to Creighton in August 1903, and this remained his home since, with the exception of one year at Spalding. During his 36 years of residence in Creighton, Mr. Smith was engaged in a number of business enterprises. He also was employed as a construction foreman for J.P. Roddle, and the Western Bridge and Construction Company for nearly fifteen years. At one time he was owner of a picture theater at Pierce, which he operated for two years, but maintained his residence in Creighton during that time. In later years he retired from active work. Left to mourn his passing are his wife, five daughters, Mrs. Olive Kehne, Mrs. Helen Clare, and Mrs. Rena Kocina of Winnetoon; Mrs. Bernice Henry and Mrs. Genevieve Bishop of Glendale, Calif., two sons, Foster of Hendricks, Minn., and David of Niland, Calif.; 15 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the home, then at the Federated Church at 3:00 o'clock. Rev. Basil Anderson officiated. A large assemblage of friends gathered to pay a last tribute to the deceased. Pall bearers were George Agler, Jake Jundt, Ernest Jacobs, Paul Wegner, Joe Volkening, and H.W. Woodworth. Interment was made in Greenwood Cemetery. The Creighton Masonic Ldoge, of which Mr. Smith was a member, was in charge of the service at the grave.
