Lewis was born Feb. 2, 1917, on the kitchen table at 829 9th Ave. along with his identical twin, Marvin and placed in two shoe boxes on the stove door. His father Otto declared he had a pair of boys that day and the doctor's bill was $60! Lewis spent all of his life in Helena and graduated from Helena High School in 1936. He spent his senior year specializing in auto mechanics at Helena Vo Tech. He worked at Anderson Motors as a grease monkey for five years and it was here that he developed his love of cintage automobiles. He became a member of the Capital Carriage Auto Club in later years. In 1937 Lewis married Dorothy Krueger of Chicago, and in 1941 he worked for his father at Brackman's Grocery Stores until 1945, when he served in the U.S. Navy. He then returned to Helena and managed Brackman's Grocery Store until his retirement in 1979. Lewis and Dorothy's first home was at 729 9th Ave., a home his grandfather Otto Louis Brackman had built. In 1949 Lewis purchased his Victorian home on Highland. He started refinishing antique furniture and discovered a passion for old things. He then established Brackman's Antique Shop in his home. He purchased the antique inventory of Mrs. Whaley on Sixth Avenue as a gift for his wife who had been ill with the mumps to cheer her up. Our mother wasn't sure she felt better after that purchase, but it became a wonderful avocation for both of them. He appraised innumerable estates in his lifetime. Lewis saved Helena's early paper history from destruction, including papers from TC Powers, Fort Shaw and Hershfield records, thus encouraging many people to become enthusiastic historic document collectors. He was one of Helena's most knowledgeable historians and was an active member of the Westerners Club. Lewis and Dorothy traveled to Europe and Aruba and spent nine years wintering in Miami with their daughter Lynne. His other great loves were cutting and gathering wood in the hills for his fireplace, and digging for antique bottles with his son, Tom, as his partner. He was a father and grandfather beyond compare. Lewis is survived by: his sisters, Florence Cleveland and Verna Krout (Jack); son Tom Brackman (Alene); daughter Lynne Harcharik (Bruce); Emily Johnson, Lewis' caregiver; grandchildren: Beth Chappell (Rick), Jennifer Vielleux (Mike), Kathy Brackman, Steve Brackman (Marla), Terry Harcharik, and Josh Harcharik (Rebeca); great-grandchildren: Jesse, Kenna and Grace Vielleux, Sarah Chappell, Drew and Rylee Brackman. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy, in 1996, his twin brother Marvin in 2002, and his granddaughter Kirsh in 1993. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held June 23.
