Hayslett Anonymous Star Beacon The Star Beacon Thu Oct 13, 2011, 09:00 AM EDT JEFFERSON — Lewis Robert Hayslett, age 84, of Maplewood Drive, died peacefully Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2011, at his home. The son of John G. and Ella (Burns) Hayslett, he was born April 3, 1927, in Cherry Valley and was a lifelong area resident. A Veteran of the United States Navy, he served during World War II with the SeaBees. On July 4, 1947, he married the love of his life, Shirley M. Cochran and together they set out to make the perfect marriage and family. He and Shirley treasured time with their family picnicking at Hayslett Lake, dining out, traveling to Las Vegas and New York City, and dancing at the Hotel Ashtabula. Theirs was truly a love story. Never were they far from each other's hearts and minds. They were inseparable in life and now in death. Prior to his retirement, Lew worked as a journeyman plumber for the Plumbers and Pipefitters Union, Local #55. He also owned and operated Jefferson Mini-Storage. On many occasions, he generously donated storage space to victims of fire or floods until they could get back on their feet. Lewis loved being a citizen of Jefferson; he was so proud of his town and all that it had to offer. He served with the Dorset Volunteer Fire Department and for many years he was instrumental in garnering support for the Jefferson Fire Department. Lew believed in doing all he could to make the fire department run more efficiently and safely. Whatever tools or equipment were needed, he was always there to lend his support or a helping hand. For his years of dedication, he was made an honorary Jefferson Firefighter. He was especially proud of Hayslett Lake Park. He loved sharing the facility with the community. Many family gatherings, church services, Boy Scout functions and even a few weddings were held there over the years. Lew was especially honored to have received the Chuck Lewis Community Award from the Jefferson Area Chamber of Commerce for his dedication to Jefferson. His survivors include one daughter, Sherry Gianantonio of Ashtabula; three grandchildren, Jeffery (Kay) Gianantonio of Jefferson, Stacey (Brian) Vaughan of Cape Elizabeth, Maine and Hilary Gianantonio of Rio Rancho, N.M.; four great-grandchildren, Delaney and Jared Gianantonio and Zachary and Samantha Vaughan; one sister, Lola Metzler of Jefferson; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of sixty-four years, Shirley M. Hayslett on Sept. 8, 2011; sisters, Grace Morford, Clara Hedrick, Nellie VanWinkle and Mae Stainfield; brothers, Lawrence and Roy Hayslett; and his parents. A Service will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 15th, at ZABACK-DUCRO FUNERAL HOME, 500 W. Prospect Road, Ashtabula, with Sister Laurie Divoky, Spiritual Care Coordinator for Hospice of the Western Reserve, officiating. He will be buried in Dorset Cemetery next to his beloved wife. Calling Hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, Oct. 14th and from 10 a.m. until time of Service, Saturday, at the Funeral Home.
