She was born August 12, 1928, in Dorset, Ohio, the daughter of John C. and Lilah (Bolte) Cochran and had been a lifelong area resident. A graduate of Dorset High School, she worked 56 years for the Ashtabula County Board of Health, retiring as Registrar and Administrator in 2010. A well-documented work-a-holic, Shirley was passionate about her job and serving the public, regularly coming in after hours or on weekends to help those in need. She was fashionable and took great pride in her dress, always decked out in heels and diamonds. She treasured time with her family picnicking at Hayslett Lake. Her soul-mate and best friend, Lewie was her constant companion. They often enjoyed dining out, traveling to Las Vegas and New York City and dancing at the Hotel Ashtabula. Her survivors include her husband, Lewis Hayslett, whom she married July 4, 1947...She was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Cochran; one sister, Joyce Johnson; and her parents. Calling Hours will be from 4 to 6 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 11th and from 11 a.m. to 12 Noon, Monday, Sept. 12th, at ZABACK-DUCRO FUNERAL HOME, 500 W. Prospect Road, Ashtabula. A Service will follow at 12 Noon, Monday, at the Funeral Home, with Sister Laurie Divoky, Spiritual Care Coordinator for Hospice of the Western Reserve, officiating. Burial will be next to her mother in Dorset Cemetery, Dorset. Contributions may be made to Hospice of the Western Reserve, 1166 Lake Ave., Ashtabula, Ohio or the First Congregational United Church of Christ, 41 E. Jefferson St., Jefferson.
