Hege was born October 2, 1893 at Halstead, Kansas, but moved to Emporia, Kansas at the age of 13, graduated from Emporia High in 1912, from the College of Emporia in 1916 and that same summer, received his B.S. Degree from the Kansas State Normal. He taught at Abilene, KS high school during 1916-1917, and enlisted in the Officer's training school in Fort Riley in May of 1917. He completed his officer's training course in August, receiving his commission as Lieutenant. On September 1, 1917, at the 506 Market Street home of his bride [Emporia, KS], he married Jane J. Lewis in a ceremony performed before 90 guests. Jane Lewis Hege was a life-long resident of Emporia. She was a graduate of Emporia High and had been a student at the College of Emporia where she was an accomplished musician, having studied voice under Miss Catherine Rosser. Lt. Hege went overseas early in 1918 and was in the same company as Emporian Lt. John Richards who wrote to relatives on August 25th, 1919 saying, "It is with deepest sympathy that I write you of the death of Loy Hege, a noble and ever-inspiring officer, a true friend and a pal to all. The position occupied by our Company was opened on with shrapnel and gas shells the night of August 7th and he was severely gassed. He was taken to the hospital about 6:30 a.m. where the nurses and doctors did all in their power for him, but to no avail. He died on the afternoon of August 15th. He realized the day before his death that he was to go and his last thoughts were of home and home folks." Lt. Hege was buried in a military cemetery nine miles north of the city Toul, France, his aluminum grave marker bearing his name, rank, organization and the grave number 191. Loy A. Hege died not knowing that twenty-six days later, his wife gave birth to his daughter. Hege, Loy A., 2d Lt., Emporia, enlisted man, died Aug 15, 1918, Co A 355 Inf. His body was returned from France to Emporia, arriving on the midnight train of 22 Jul 1921. His funeral was held at the 5th and Market Street home of his widow at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, July 25th. Members of the Homer J. Ball American Legion formed an aisle down which the American Flag draped casket was carried to the hearse by six ex-serivce men, one of whom was John Richards, who had first reported Loy's death in 1918. Led by Grady's Band playing a funeral dirge, a procession of more than 60 went to the corner of 7th and Commercial where they stood at attention as the hearse passed. At Maplewood Cemetery, after Rev. James Todd of the First Presbyterian Church read the service at the grave, a firing squad fired a military salute and a bugler blew taps. 09-16-1917 Emporia Gazette Miss Jane J. Lewis and Lieut. Loy A. Hege were married Saturday evening at 8:30 o'clock at the home of the bride, 506 Market Street. Dr. W. C. Templeton, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, performed the ceremony, using the ring service, in the presence of about ninety guests, relatives and friends of the bride and groom. The rooms of the Lewis home were artistically decorated with a profusion of ferns, smilax and cut flowers. In the alcove formed by the bay windows, an embankment of ferns, with white, pink and lavender asters, had been arranged, with a railing entwined with smilax before it, to form a chancel. The wedding party stood in the alcove during the ceremony. The stairway also was decorated with the smilax. White candles, tied with pink tulle bows, were used effectively in lighting. Preceding the ceremony, Miss Helen Jones, a sister of the bride, sang "Her Rose," by Coombs, and Gomer Williams, a cousin of the bride, sand "Dawn," by d'Hardelot, and "Noon and Night," by Hawley. Miss Mary E. Lewis played the accompaniments. Miss Lewis also played Mendelssohn's Wedding March as the bride descended the stairs, and met the groom and Doctor Templeton at the foot of the stairway. The bride was beautiful in white crepe meteor, trimmed with pearl and iridescent beads, and made with a court train. The bodice and sleeves were of chiffon, and the rope girdle of pearl beads. She carried bride's roses and lilies-of-the-valley, and wore a tulle veil. She wore a hand-carved gold bracelet, the gift of the groom. A wedding dinner followed the ceremony, and Mr. and Mrs. Hege went Saturday night to Kansas City. They will go from there to Junction City. Mrs. Hege's going-away suit was of cinnamon brown, with hat and shoes to match. Mrs. Hege is the daughter of Griffith W. Jones, of Emporia, and the adopted daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. L. W. Lewis. She has lived all her life in Emporia. She is a graduate of the Emporia High School, and was a member of the sophomore class of the College of Emporia last year. She is an accomplished musician, having studied voice under Miss Catherine Rosser, and was a member of the Girl's Glee Club of the College. She is a young woman of winning personality, and is loved by scores of friends. Lieutenant Hege is the son of Mr. and Mrs. C. [G.] A. Hege, of Emporia, and is a graduate of the High School and the College of Emporia. He taught last year in the Abilene High School, resigning his position in the spring to enter the Reserve Officers' Training Camp at Fort Riley. At the conclusion of the training period he received his commission as second lieutenant, and is now stationed at Fort Riley. Lieutenant and Mrs. Hege both are popular socially in Emporia, and scores of sincere friends with them happiness. Out-of-town guests at the wedding were W. F. Jones, of Dumas, MO, a brother of the bride; Mrs. T. S. Howell, a sister of the bride; Mr. Howell and daughters, Martha Jane and Elizabeth, of Salina; Mrs. Flora Yetman, of Americus, grandmother of the groom; Mrs. Rachel Rosecrans, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Mrs. K. E. Hege, Halstead, aunts of the groom; Miss Alisa Craig, Osage City. Humphrey Jones, a brother of the bride, and Mrs. Jones, of Fort Sheridan, were unable to be present, as Mr. Jones is in training camp.
