Description	:	Lillian was born on a farm her parents rented about one and one-half miles east of Traer. My first recollections were on another rented farm a few miles southwest of Traer but by 1918, my parents had purchased a farm three and one-half miles southeast of Traer. My first recollections were on another rented farm a few miles southwest of Traer but by 1918, my parents had purchased a farm three and one-half miles southeast of Traer. That was our home for more than fifty years. That spring, my brother Leslie, and I started to school at Perry #3, a rural school about three-fourths of a mile from our home. We walked except in bad weather when our father took USA in a horse drawn wagon or bobsled. Rides were shared with neighbor children, too. A couple of summers, Leslie and I took piano lessons from the blind music teacher in Traer, Mr. Muirhead. Leslie was privileged to drive our one-horse buggy for this adventure. When we graduated from eighth grade, we had a ceremony for Tama County students at the Toledo theatre. That summer, Leslie learned to drive a Ford Coupe our father purchased for USA to drive to Traer High School. We graduated with the class of 1930. Many were the hours I waited for my brother while he practiced with the football team before we went home after school. I did my homework in the car usually. We country kids carried our school lunches, too, and ate together in a room at school. Many of USA made friendships during these times that lasted through the years. Almost immediately Leslie took his first paid job, assistant hired hand on R.C. Wood dairy farm, and I was to help with the domestic chores for six weeks, while the family took an auto trip west. Milking was done by machine three times a day with the first milking about four AM. Some milk was separated for cream but the bulk was taken to the creamery each morning. That was quite a responsibility in a big strange house and unfamiliar neighborhood Les was quite ready to begin his first year at Iowa State College in Ames and I stayed at home to help my father hand pick corn. Another younger brother helped with other chores when he was home from school. In February. when I became eighteen, I was fortunate to complete the ten weeks of school in place of a teacher who got married. I stayed with the Fred Kubik family during the week and taught their two children and others in Crystal #7. The salary was $80.00 per month which was for first experience with normal training certificate. The school was a nice one with a full basement and furnace for heating. The following fall, 1931, I was hired to teach the Perry #5 school which was two miles from home and I could walk to school. However, the salary was less as the depression years were having an effect. I continued to teach this school four years. Then for three years, I was teacher of Crystal #6. I had learned to drive a Chevrolet coupe that I bought second hand, so I could come home each day to help care for mother who was ill. After she died in 1939, I had to take time out to regain my health. My three brothers were soon in service in World War II and my two sisters and I shared the domestic duties and gardening while Dad continued to farm. In March 1960, I took employment with the American Automobile Association in Marshalltown, where I stayed eleven years. After a couple of years in Iowa City and Bettendorf, I was relocated in Mason City where I worked in varied capacities of the organization. These were the growth years of the travel industry and I took every opportunity to learn by taking my vacations via auto, bus, rail, air and educational tours. When I retired in March 1978, I had traveled in forty-nine states, Canada and Europe. A trip to the Alpine countries in 1977, Hawaii in 1973, three days on the Mississippi in 1972 on the Delta Queen, and a cruise of the Caribbean in 1975 were some of the most memorable. A Canadian Rockies rail trip only makes me want to continue to Alaska via the inside passage on a ship. Either on a Elderhostel continuing educational tour or one of the several others offered, I hope to make that a reality . . . God willing! An uncle whose wife died in 1976, asked me to come to share his home in Wisconsin so when I retired, I did. I had several auto trips through the beautiful state of trees and lakes and we shared the love of parks and things of nature. In seven years, we enjoyed gardening, scenic drives and some cultural activities as well as fine friends one meets everywhere. One exciting excursion was a ride on the Wolf River on a rubber raft. After he died in 1983, I returned to my home town, Traer, on Easter Sunday of 1985. I'm glad I had the opportunity to tell my parents that I was happy they chose the best part of the best state in the best country in the world for our home. - by Lillian Vorba -
