Description	:	Robert Allen Vorba, was born on a farm near Traer, October 22, 1923, third son of Joseph and Agnes (Nechanicky) Vorba. He received his early education in rural school, Perry #3 then graduated from Traer High School in 1941. During his outstanding athletic career, he led T.H.S. football and basketball teams in the early '40's and was one of the schools outstanding track athletes, establishing a new Iowa-Cedar league record for the mile run of 4:53.5. Read More	Robert Allen Vorba, was born on a farm near Traer, October 22, 1923, third son of Joseph and Agnes (Nechanicky) Vorba. He received his early education in rural school, Perry #3 then graduated from Traer High School in 1941. During his outstanding athletic career, he led T.H.S. football and basketball teams in the early '40's and was one of the schools outstanding track athletes, establishing a new Iowa-Cedar league record for the mile run of 4:53.5. In June, 1941, shortly after graduation, he enlisted in the Navy, and after training as a gunner s mate was assigned to the crew of a new cruiser, the San Juan. He was on the vessel's first "shakedown cruise in the Atlantic, and was on it more than three years in the Pacific. Not many war veterans experienced more combat service than Bob Vorba. During five years of service he was at sea 42 months, and was in 13 major naval actions, including Midway, Guadalcanal and others in the early part of that war when the Japs seemed to be everywhere in the Pacific. He was away from home over three years before he received a leave. Then he was on the U.S.S. Sapho for a year or more. He was in Australia, New Zealand and Shanghai, and participated in the invasion of the Philippines. He was at Sasebo, Japan when the war ended. He often said the greatest thrill he ever experienced was when his ship was entering any port of the U.S.A. He was discharged in October, 1946. Most of the time after discharge, he was a partner of his brother, Les, in the Traer Oil Company service station. He was active in promoting softball for the spring season and in this capacity, he had attended a meeting in Clutier. Driving into Traer from the east on Highway #8, Bob was apparently unable to straighten out his car after rounding a short curve and in so doing a terrible accident occurred in which he was instantly killed at 3:20 AM, March 30, 1948. He is buried in St. Vaclav cemetery near Clutier, Iowa. - by Lillian Vorba -
