Description	:	Joseph Michael was the oldest child born August 8, 1887 on a farm in Grant Township to Joseph and Mary (Kvidera) Vorba. His early childhood was spent in Woodbury County near Sioux City where he began his, education while the family lived there. After ten years, the family returned to Tama County by train. Read More	Joseph Michael was the oldest child born August 8, 1887 on a farm in Grant Township to Joseph and Mary (Kvidera) Vorba. His early childhood was spent in Woodbury County near Sioux City where he began his, education while the family lived there. After ten years, the family returned to Tama County by train. They purchased a farm southeast of Lincoln where his help was needed but he continued to go to school in winter months, walking many miles in all kinds of weather. There were three sisters and two brothers in the family. On September 14, 1910, he was married to Agnes Marie Nechanicky, oldest daughter of John and Frances Nechanicky of Carroll Township. They began married life on a farm near Gladbrook where their first son, Leslie, was born July 11,1911. In 1913,they were renting a farm east of Traer where their first daughter, Lillian, was born February 7, and by 1915 a second daughter, Margaret was born December 2, while they were renting a farm southwest of Traer. In the spring of 1918, the Vorbas purchased their first farm three miles southeast of Traer where they continued to make their home and raise the family of six children. Joseph born December 4, 1918, Audrey born January 8, 1922 and Robert born October 22, 1924. All the children attended Perry #3 school through the eighth grade. One of the fondest hopes was to have all children get a high school education. The depression years made it very difficult but by renting additional acres and with the help of the growing family, they did accomplish what seemed an impossible dream. Sadly, Mrs. Vorba died at the age of 49 in 1939, before the last two graduated. During some of the more difficult years, Mrs. Vorba raised poultry, chickens, ducks, geese and turkeys and they supplemented their income by dressing and selling fresh poultry to markets in Waterloo and to private families for the holidays. Eggs, cream and homemade butter were also sold. Garden vegetables and fruit were welcome sales items, too. The family took pride in offering the best for sale. When the course of history indicated military service, two sons, Robert soon after graduation in 1941 enlisted in the Navy and Joseph in November 1941, also enlisted in the navy. In February 1942, Leslie was in the Coast Guard. Mr. Vorba continued to farm on a more limited scale with the help of the daughters. Lillian and Margaret had been teaching for years and helped with the summer work. In 1952, Audrey Tudor with her five small children came to make her home with her father on the farm. Joseph Jr. farmed with his father in partnership from 1946-1961 and rented additional acres when machinery was available after the war. Anderson De December 27, 1955; (4) Joseph married Norma (Handt) Maxwell February 18, 1950 children : (a) Roger Alan born December 5 1950, married Samrit Johtha July 30, 1973, children : Julie Ann, June 4, 1974, Susan Lea, March 20, 1980 and Robert Alan, March 15 1982. (b) Cynthia Marie born July 26, 1954 married John Buresh June 3, 1972, children: Jennifer Lynn, January 8, 1973 and Leslie Marie, October 10, 1977. (c) Dale Lee, November 27, 1968. (5) Audrey married Charles L. Tudor, October 14, 1942, children: (a) Roberta Ann May 31, 1943, married Harold Hulme November 28, 1964, children: Kathleen Marie, August 23, 1965, Kellee Michelle, December 9, 1966, Kerryn Renee, May 1, 1968 and Julee Ann, May 1, 1970. Second marriage Gilbert Sorrell, November 13, 1971. (b) Patricia married Roger Abernathy - child - Patrick, July 28, 1968; (c) Mary Jean married Roger Christensen, November 16,1968, children Chad, October 30,1969 and Jarod, May 30, 1971; (d) Nancy Jo married Albert Risch, October 10, 1969, children: Albie July 30, 1970, Eric February 14, 1972. Second marriage Gary Hobby, August 1, 1976, children: Amanda, April 22, 1979 and Laura, April 16, 1982. (e) Charles Michael born December 24, 1950, married Veronica Draper, January 31, 1976, children: Zachary Michael, April 20, 1976 and Zeb Anthony June 21, 1977. Mr. Vorba died December 7, 1975 at Sunnycrest in Dysart and is buried beside his wife in St. Wenceslaus cemetery near Clutier. The son, Robert, was killed in an auto accident near Traer March 30, 1948 and is buried beside his parents. Son Joseph died May 23,1972 of a heart attack and Leslie died August 28, 1977 also of heart trouble. Both are buried at St. Paul cemetery in Traer. As a special thought for my parents and brothers who loved the land, they are spared the disgrace of seeing absent land owners scourge the earth in the name of progress and materialism. The once proud Lone Oak Farm had to see its large farm and house burned by eager fire-fighters for practice. So, I can only say today's mighty oak is yesterdays little nut that held its ground. by Lillian Vorba
