May 13, 1939 in Harlow, ND was the fifth child(Edna, Emma, Henry, Selma, Lillian, Marian) of Mariana Petersen and Nels Nelsen. Her parents moved from Kenmare, ND to Harlow, ND where she attended grade school. She graduated from the Minnewaukan H.S. in 1934 and with the exception of two summers spent in Valley City and St. Paul, had been living in and about Minneaukan. On Oct. 15, 1938 in Devils Lake, ND she married Burdette Knowlton of Minneaukan. She is survived by three sisters, Edna Marie (Nels U.) Nelsen of Kenmare, ND. Emma (Josef) Sandberg of Harlow; Marian (Frank) Meier of Devils Lake, ND; brother, Henry "Hank" Nelsen of Brinsmade and a half brother, Christ Nelsen of Kenmare. Her parents and one half sister, Marie Nelsen preceded her in death. Her tragic death was indeed a shock to the relatives and the community. She was ambitious and industrious as a student, willing to undertake any task, working quietly and faithfully until its completion. Her husband, the brother and sisters have the sincere sympathy of all in their loss. Funeral services were held on Wed. with a brief service at the house at 1 p.m. and the burial service at St. Olaf's Lutheran Church west of here with Rev. H. M. Annestad of Esmond officiating.
