Description	:	ELIOT, Maine — Lillian H. Crowell, 96, of Eliot, died Sunday, Oct. 9, 2011, at her home. Lillian Roberta was born Sept. 16, 1915, to Daniel and Lillian (Weymouth) Herrick, at Sandy Point of Stockton Springs, Maine. As a child, she lived in Sandy Point, Bowdoinham, Lisbon Falls and Charleston, Maine. After marriage she lived in several states and briefly in Turkey. Lillian is survived by her children, Ann-Lillian Schell, Jo Nancy Gunn (the Rev. Carleton), Marcia Violante, Deborah Berthiaume (Steven), Samuel Crowell IV (Elizabeth), Errica Stevens (the Rev. Crowell, 96, of Eliot, died Sunday, Oct. 9, 2011, at her home. Lillian Roberta was born Sept. 16, 1915, to Daniel and Lillian (Weymouth) Herrick, at Sandy Point of Stockton Springs, Maine. As a child, she lived in Sandy Point, Bowdoinham, Lisbon Falls and Charleston, Maine. After marriage she lived in several states and briefly in Turkey. Lillian is survived by her children, Ann-Lillian Schell, Jo Nancy Gunn (the Rev. Carleton), Marcia Violante, Deborah Berthiaume (Steven), Samuel Crowell IV (Elizabeth), Errica Stevens (the Rev. Richard) and Kristen Krickett-Merrill (Patrick); and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by Samuel Crowell III, her husband of 67 years; brothers Irving, Arland, John and Theodore, and their spouses; sisters Charlotte Burbank, Prudence Stanton and Shirley Wynn, and their spouses; and three sons-in-law. Lillian showed promise as a writer and poet very early in life. In 1933, her senior year at Lisbon Falls High School, she received an award of $10 for the best essay in the State of Maine in the fifth annual Gorgas Essay Contest; at the national level, she received honorable mention as fifth best out of 18,000 entries. She graduated as valedictorian. She moved to Chestnut Hills, Mass., to work as a governess and attend night classes at Boston University. After three years of working and saving, and intent on studying history, political science and journalism, she attended the University of Maine with the Class of 1940. She was an assistant editor of the campus newspaper, associate member in the Maine Masque and she attained national recognition in archery. She continued working as a "mother's assistant" as she studied, and for a while she had to row across a river to attend classes. In 1939, she married her husband Sam, an engineering student, who became a career naval officer. Lillian never stopped reading, learning or leading. Along with Sam, she served in many capacities in the United Methodist Church in Virginia, New York and Maine, and was a 50-year member of the Eliot United Methodist Church. She was a leader in Girl Scouts for 28 years in Virginia, New York and Maine, where she formed the first Girl Scout troops — Brownies through Seniors — in East Eliot. In 1975, she was awarded the Thanks Badge, one of the highest tributes from the National Girl Scout Association. As a granger, she held many offices in John F. Hill Grange, York Pomona and Maine State Grange, and received many commendations for her years in the position of lecturer. She was also a life member and former president of the Eliot Garden Club, a member of Eliot Historical Society, Friends of the William Fogg Library, member of the York Writer's Club and many other town and area organizations. In both 1979 and 1980, she was named the Maine Merit Mother of the Year. Lillian and Sam were each honored with the Fabian Drake Award (Eliot Citizen of the Year), her in 1976. They were both named Volunteers of America in 1997. Beginning in the late 1950s, she began writing as the Eliot news correspondent for the Kittery-Eliot Star, which became the York County Coast Star, then for many years with Foster's Daily Democrat as a column writer, special features writer and photographer. Her family would like to thank Janet, Carol and David from Wentworth Hospice. Her final days were at home under the care of her daughters. SERVICES: A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 15, in her church, the Eliot United Methodist Church, Route 236, Eliot. Friends may visit with Lillian's family from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14, at J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery.
