He was born on Feb. 24, 1917, in Boston, in his grandfather's home, a son of Samuel and Helen (Josselyn) Crowell. Read More	ELIOT, Maine -- Samuel Crowell III, 89, of Goodwin Road, died on Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2006, at his home. He was born on Feb. 24, 1917, in Boston, in his grandfather's home, a son of Samuel and Helen (Josselyn) Crowell. As a child he lived in Webster, Mass., as well as several other towns nearby and Manchester, N.H. He graduated from Thayer Academy in Braintree, Mass., in 1935. He attended the University of Maine, where he graduated in 1939 with a degree in mechanical engineering. He is survived by his loving wife, Lillian R. (Herrick) of Eliot; daughters, Ann-Lillian Schell of Kasilof, Ala., JoNancy and her husband, the Rev. Carlton Gunn, of Sanford, Maine, Marcia and her husband, Bruce Violante, of Lakeville, Mass., Deborah and her husband, Steven Berthiaume, of Eliot, Errica and her husband, Richard Stevens, of Raleigh , N.C., and Kristen and her husband, Patrick D. Merrill, of Eliot; son, Samuel Crowell IV and his wife, Elizabeth, of Seabrook, Texas; 21 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; two nephews; and one niece. He also leaves behind devoted caregivers and friends from Visiting Nurses of Southern Maine and Hospice of Southern Maine, especially Mark, Doris, Janice and Caroline. He was a second lieutenant, infantry, in the R.O.T.C., and transferred to the Navy Reserves. As an ensign, he attended graduate school at the U.S. Naval Academy in 1941. From there, he was sent to Portsmouth, N.H., as ship superintendent. In August of 1942, he was attached to Amphibious Forces in Norfolk, Va. While he was there, he was a liaison between Administration/Norfolk and a base in Maryland. As lieutenant j.g., he and a lieutenant wrote a training book for "L.C.I."s. He applied for sea duty after overseeing the barracks for training crews at Passion Point, Md. He was assigned to Galveston, Texas, as a deck officer on a L.T.C. He returned to Norfolk and then on to San Diego to a destroyer base where he oversaw the conversion of a liner into a troop transport. In 1944, he attended guard school and then was sent to the Panama Canal Zone. On V.J. Day, he was promoted to lieutenant commander and was asked to transfer to the Navy. He was assigned to Stockton, Calif., to mothball A.P.A's. He was placed on inactive duty in 1946. In 1951, he was called to active duty during the Korean War at the Brooklyn Naval Shipyard as ship superintendent, where he worked on the Aircraft Carrier Bennington, among others. Between wars, he worked for Stone and Webster out of Richmond, Va. Following the Korean War, he worked in a civilian capacity at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine, from 1954 until retirement in 1976. While employed there, the Navy sent him to Washington, D.C, and to Turkey from November of 1968 until June of 1969. His wife and two youngest children went with him. He remained in the Naval Reserve until after the Vietnam War. Samuel was a very active member of the Eliot United Methodist Church. He had been a faithful church member wherever he was sent. He was a member of several choirs. He also served as Sunday School superintendent, teacher and greeter and served in any other capacity that was needed. He delivered turkey dinners provided by the church in conjunction with working with the Meals on Wheels program, which he did without fail for 20 years. Producing crops to feed his growing family, he also raised enough to feed his flocks of sheep and chickens, producing plenty of corn, apples and eggs to sell to friends and neighbors. In retirement, he founded the farmers market in town and continued to set up faithfully every Saturday from Memorial Day until the town festival in September for more than 18 years. When he joined the Grange in 1954, it was a start to a new avenue of community service. He served on many committees; he was an active member of the John F. Hill Grange, the York Pomona Grange and the State Grange. He was a member of the Eliot Historical Society, Eliot Police Boosters and the Republican Party. With the Grange, he worked on the Acton Fair Grounds committee, beauty pageant and the Grange concession booth. In Virginia, Sam served as a volunteer fireman. He received awards for his service to the American Red Cross. During his years at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Samuel donated blood over 800 times, amounting to over 100 gallons, as well as often giving as called upon prior to his moving to this area in 1954. Sam headed up a Eliot Festival Day art show encouraging youth and adults for 15 years to further their art in the community, personally overseeing the hanging of each years exhibit. Sam developed and encouraged excellence and diversity in his family and his community on the state, county and local levels. SERVICES: Friends may visit with his family from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday at the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Road, Kittery, Maine 03904. A funeral will be held at — p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 17, at his church, the Eliot United Methodist Church on Route 236 in Eliot. In lieu of flowers, donations of blood may be made in his memory, or donations to the Veterans organization of one's choice. Arrangements are entrusted to the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery.
