The second of two daughters, she was born September 1, 1916 on the family farm near McCune, KS to Robert Roy and Jessie Irene Houseworth Overley.As a young girl she enjoyed being an active presence in the lives of all four of her grandparents. Read More	OKLAHOMA CITY Linnie Irene Overley Stevenson, 99 passed away Friday, January 15, 2016. The second of two daughters, she was born September 1, 1916 on the family farm near McCune, KS to Robert Roy and Jessie Irene Houseworth Overley.As a young girl she enjoyed being an active presence in the lives of all four of her grandparents. She was born and raised in the Methodist church, developing a love for the Lord and music at a very young age. She attended church camp at Baker University and began singing solos and playing the piano for her local church and school activities in McCune, while also participating in chorus, school plays, glee club and playing the French horn.Irene completed high school early at the age of sixteen, immediately enrolling in Kansas State Teacher's College in Pittsburg, KS now Pittsburg State University, majoring in music performance and education with a minor in English. She became a life member of Sigma Alpha Iota Music Sorority and the "Gorilla" Alumni Association.Upon graduation in 1939, Irene began her teaching career at Cockrell, KS, serving several schools in southeastern Kansas including Morehead, KS where she met the love of her life, Howard Stevenson. Miss Overley and Mr. Stevenson were united in marriage May 1, 1942 in Fayetteville, AR. Mr. Stevenson served in the 101st Airborne during WWII while Irene continued teaching. She taught until they adopted their daughter, Kathleen Sue in May 1953.Irene and her family moved to Pryor, OK in 1954. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, serving at the local and district levels, Federated Women's Club, Nat'l Service Sorority, PTA, Band Boosters and numerous other school and civic organizations. She shared her music talents with all, and taught private lessons for over thirty years. After her husband's death in 2004, Irene remained in the family home until moving to Oklahoma City in May 2006 to be near her family. Irene became a member of Chapel Hill United Methodist Church, enjoying the fellowship of her new friends and delighting in family excursions. Irene was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Nellie Mar Geary and her husband of 61 years. She is survived by her daughter Kathy Pierson and son-in-law Ric Pierson of Oklahoma City, OK, one grandson Adam Pierson, his wife Kassidy Toler Pierson and two great grandchildren Daxton Pierson and Tinley Pierson all of Yukon, OK. She is also survived by one nephew, Bob Geary and his wife Joan Geary of McCune Kansas, and two great great nephews, Ty Geary and Will Geary of Topeka, KS.A Celebration of Life Service is being held, Friday, January 29, 2016, @ 11:00am, Chapel Hill United Methodist Church, 2717 W Hefner Rd., Oklahoma City, OK.
