Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 11, 2015, at Union Creek Lutheran Church, rural Akron. Reverend Carla Nelson will officiate. Military honors will be provided by the Hoschler American Legion Post 186 of Akron. Inurnment will be at a later date in Union Creek Lutheran Cemetery. Lloyd John Henry Meyer was born August 4, 1926, in Akron, the son of Louis John and Anna (Haage) Meyer. He attended school in Akron. Following his schooling, he helped his parents on the farm. In 1944, he enlisted in the United States Army. He served his country during WWII while stationed overseas. He was honorably discharged in 1946. Following his discharge, he returned home to continue helping on the farm. He was united in marriage to Betty Ann Weyen on October 22, 1951, in Luverne, Minnesota. They made their home in Akron. Lloyd went to work for the Akron Lumber Company for several years before beginning his 22-year career with the Akron Farmers Coop. Following his retirement, Lloyd worked part-time for the school in Akron. For nearly 40 years, Lloyd read the water level of the Big Sioux River at Akron, something he took great pride in doing. He also was a volunteer for the Akron Fire Department for 23 years, serving as Fire Chief for two years. He was also the Plymouth County Fire Chief for two years. He was a member of Union Creek Lutheran Church and the Hoschler American Legion Post 186 in Akron. He was an avid fan of the New York Yankees for many years. He enjoyed being in the men’s coffee club at the nursing home. But most of all, he loved the times spent with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Survivors include his wife of over 63 years, Betty of Akron; 3 daughters: Brenda Nickels of Mt. Sterling, KY, Deb (Rick) McPherson of Akron, and April (Shane) Wortman of McCook Lake, SD; 5 grandchildren: Cody (Keesha) Nickels, Kyle (Kayla) Nickels, Teresa Marnach, Jeremy (Alison) McPherson, and Brianna (Chad) Sommervold; 9 great-grandchildren; his grand puppy, Abbey; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and 3 sisters: Alma (Jim) Knecht, Helen (Dick) Tentinger, and Dorothy (Bill) Boomgaarden.
