Description	:	Lois Ivy (Kost) Coffey, 72, passed away at the Chariton, Iowa Legacy Lodge on 25 February 2020. Ivy was born in Leon, Iowa on 16 March 1945, to Ivan and Georgia Eloise (Petty) Kost. She was the youngest of their three daughters and spent most of her early days on the family's farm east of Humeston. Ivy was born in Leon, Iowa on 16 March 1945, to Ivan and Georgia Eloise (Petty) Kost. She was the youngest of their three daughters and spent most of her early days on the family's farm east of Humeston. School was attended in both Cambria and Mormon Trail Districsts, Wayne County, where Ivy greatly enjoyed playing six-on-six basketball. On 9 June 1962, Ivy married Jack Coffey in LeRoy, Iowa. They lived briefly in Mount Ayr, Iowa before moving just south of Russell, Iowa where she and Jack built their dream home. There, Ivy enjoyed her passion for nature, animals and gardening. She worked at Mary Greeley Hospital, Ames, Iowa, where she learned about compassion and humanity. Then she worked at Hy-Vee Regal Stamps before beginning her lifelong career at the Russell Community School. Ivy loved helping educate and watching young students grow and learn. She often said, “They can’t take an education away from you.” That principle fueled her own desire for continual learning. After Jack's passing (in 1996) and her retirement, Ivy remained in the house she loved so much, referring to it as “her little cabin in the woods”, and spent every moment she could observing nature. Ivy was a prolific reader who read for relaxation and self-education. Other hobbies that helped Ivy fill her time include gardening, fishing, cooking, and quilting, though most was filled by her grandchildren. Over the years, we would find Ivy at some of her favorite fishing holes and she was never afraid to share a minnow or a worm. Known for her wonderful homemade cooking and joyous trays of Christmas candy, Ivy tried passing her recipes down to her grandchildren; alas, we know none can ever be duplicated. Left to cherish her memory are Ivy's children, Sandy (Brad) Piatt, of Ankeny, Iowa and Jim (Lisa) Coffey, of Indianola, Iowa; granddaughters, Amber Piatt, Allison Coffey and Julie Coffey; along with Ivy's sister, Marilyn Mosebach; her siblings-in-law, Jake (Mary) Coffey, Linda Clifton and Randy Coffey; and a host of nephews and nieces. Ivy was preceded in death by her parents, Ivan and Georgia Kost; husband, Jack Coffey; sister, Phyllis (Dale) Briley; mother-in-law, Kathryn (Mardis) Coffey Renoe; and brother-in-law, Denny Clifton.
