Elmer Britten, who lost I her life when the building in which she was working-at the Cornhusker ordnance plant near Grand Island exploded in the midst of an electrical storm, on Saturday morning. Monsignor F.J. Kopecke V.F., of Sacred Heart Church, Lawrence, officiated. Arrangements were in charge of Merten Bros. Funeral Home, Blue Hill. Mrs. Britten had been with her husband since he entered the service in October 1942, and he had recently been transferred to the Grand Island air Base. She had entered the employment of the Cornhusker plant less than two months ago. The deceased was 28 years of age, the daughter of Mrs. Barbara Reiman of Lawrence. Besides her husband and mother she is survived by three brothers, Robert and Elmer Reiman of Lawrence; Lawrence Reiman of Kansas City, Mo., Joseph Reiman of Pasco, Oregon; and one sister, Miss Agnes Reiman of Edgar. Cpl. Britten is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Britten who live 13 miles southwest of Lawrence. ================== The Edgar Sun (Edgar, NE), Friday, June 8, 1945; pg. 1 Grand Island Blast Claims Lawrence Resident The people of the community were deeply grieved and shocked as the grim resization of a war torn world was again brought home to us last Saturday night when the news reached here of the tragedy at the Cornhusker Ammunition Plant at Grand Island and claimed the life of Mrs. Elmer Britten. Many of us have spent long hours praying for our service boys, little thinking of our civilian army who daily risk their lives in government plants preparing the supplies necessary to help open the life lines for our fighting men. Mrs. Britten was employed in a bomb loading department which was demolished by an explosion about 1:30 p.m. Saturday which caused the death of seven people. The cause of the explosion at this time is unknown. Many of the 40 workers in that building had not returned from their lunch hour or the casualties would have been higher. The day prior to her death, Mrs Britten had been honored by the award of an efficiency medal presented her by the Army and Navy. Lola Britten, nee Reiman, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Reiman, was born March 4, 1917, and departed this life at the age of 28 years, May 26, 1945. Born on a farm near St Stephens and Lawrence high school. She then worked with her sister, Miss Agnes Reiman, in Edgar becoming a skilled beauty operator. For several years she was employed in that capacity in Lincoln. She united in marriage to Elmer Britten, February 14, 1942, at Albany, California. They made their home in Oakland, California, until Cpl. Britten's induotion (sic) into the Army in October, 1942, choosing to remain near her husband as long as possible, her lot was that of all war wives who endure the hardship of over-crowded towns near Army camps. First being stationed at Sacramento, then at Houston, Texas, then to a camp in Illinois and finally located at the Army Air Field in Grand Island where Cpl. Britten is mne Ord*** Department, receiving training in B-29 operations. Besides her usband, Mrs. Britten leaves to mourn her loss, her mother, Mrs. Barbara Reiman; one sister, Agnes Reiman of Edgar; four brothers, Joseph of Pasco, Washington; Lawrence of Kansas City; Elmer and Robert of Lawrence. She was preceded in death by her father, October 1, 1933. Also leaving are a host of grief stricken friends and relatives to whom she leaves a heritage of the example of a good Christian life, which though hort, was well lived. Quoting from Msg. Kopecky's beautiful sermon, "her's w** an exemplary life for she kept the greatest commandment, "Thou shalt love the Lord they God above all things and thy neighbor as thyself for the love of God." And she certainly loved her neighbors, for she gave her life for her fellowman. Funeral services were conducted at nine o'clock Tuesday morning at St Stephens church (sic) with Msgr. Kopecky officiating at the Requiem Mass and the graveside services in St Stephens cemetery (sic).
