E. Jones, aged 11 years and 5 months The angel Azrael is with us, and his unwelcome presence has cast a gloom over every household in the city. Mothers and fathers, weeping with sympathy for the afflicted ones, clasp their children to their hearts, fearing the worst, but hoping their loved ones may be spared. It is a time of general dread and anxiety, and no one can foretell where the end may be. So far the fatal results of the disease have been confined to one family, but it is feared it will spread, and already there are rumors of other cases. The doctors differ in diagnosing the disease, some calling it diphtheria, some scarlet fever, and others dithero-scarlatina, and it has thus far baffled their treatment. One week ago yesterday Alberta, the eldest born, was buried, and yesterday Loleta's body followed its companion to the grave. And while the last sad rites are being performed for her who has just departed, weeping parents and friends are bending with bated breath over the bed of a loved son and brother who is stricken down with the same dread disease. And still another child demands their care, for one more of the fold has developed the fatal symptoms which were so soon followed by death in the other cases. It is a sad, mournful time, and the entire community weeps with the afflicted family. "There is weeping on earth for the lost, There is bowing in grief to the ground."
