She passed away Thursday, May 23, 2013, at Immanuel Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska, at the age of 88 years. On September 7, 1942, Loretta was united in marriage to Norman Petersen in Papillion, Nebraska. They made their home on the family farm near Tekamah. She passed away Thursday, May 23, 2013, at Immanuel Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska, at the age of 88 years. On September 7, 1942, Loretta was united in marriage to Norman Petersen in Papillion, Nebraska. They made their home on the family farm near Tekamah. To this union, five children were born: Shirley, Garry, Judith, Raymond, and Russell. Loretta was baptized at the Silver Creek Baptist Church in rural Tekamah. She has been a long time member of the First Baptist Church in Tekamah, where she was very active in the choir, as a Sunday School teacher, in the Women's Society, her church circle and served on many church boards and committees. She spent her life as a homemaker, a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, while working alongside Norman to build the family farm. She continued to do the bookkeeping for their farm until recent years. Loretta was also involved in many community organizations including: PEO, Silver Creek Extension Club, Burt County Co-op, Farm Bureau, and Visionaires. She compiled the history of Burt County Co-op and presented it at their annual meeting in the early 70's. After losing her sight, Loretta became involved in Nebraska Services for the Visually Impaired. She learned Braille, cane travel, and money handling as well as continuing to manage her household. In April of 1999, she was one of the main speakers at the Visually Impaired Peer Support (V.I.P.S.) Group's Nebraska State Convention. She loved to teach others of all ages the skills she learned to overcome her visual handicap. She was also instrumental in founding the Visionaires group in Tekamah and was a charter member. Loretta enjoyed gardening, crocheting, sewing, and her family. She especially loved to have her grandchildren around her. As a gift to her grandchildren, she crocheted each of them an afghan until her sight no longer allowed it. She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Judith Ann; daughter-in-law, Linda; infant brother, Dewey; and sister, Demaris Gunderson. Survivors include her beloved husband of 71 years, Norman; daughter, Shirley (Gary) Jack and three sons, Garry Petersen, Raymond (Leslie) Petersen, and Russell (Cynthia) Petersen all of Tekamah; 15 grandchildren; 31 great grandchildren; brother, Walt (Becky) Wickham of Toole, Utah; sister, Opal Peters of Omaha; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends. FUNERAL SERVICE: Tuesday, May 28, 2013, 10:30 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Tekamah. VISITATION: Monday, May 27, 2013, from 4 - 8 p.m. with the family receiving friends from 6 - 7:30 p.m. at Pelan Funeral Home in Tekamah. Visitation Tuesday will be held at the church one hour prior to the service.
