Read More	Judge Staley, Pioneer Lawyer Passes Away Considered, In His Prime, One of the Ablest Attorneys in Western Colorado; He came to Grand Junction in 1884; City Attorney Many Years This morning at four o'clock occurred the death of Loran A. Staley, one of the pioneer men of Grand Junction, in his time one of the ablest lawyers of the state. Loran A. Staley was born in Ohio in 1851 [sic]; he attended and graduated from the state university of Missouri in 1873 and came to Colorado locating for a time in Denver where he practiced his profession and later he went to Kokomo, where he remained two years. In Denver he formed a warm friendship with James W. Bucklin and Ben Safely, which was to result in a partnership which lasted a quarter of a century. Mr. Bucklin had come across the range with the railroad and located in Gunnison, but soon after he came to Grand Junction. Here his health failed somewhat; then he went to Denver and induced his two friends to enter into a partnership, one of the two to come to Grand Junction and take charge of the fast-growing business. It was Staley who decided to follow Mr. Bucklin, which he did early in 1884. Soon after his arrival in Grand Junction he was appointed to the position of city attorney in the place of Henry R. Rhone, who had resigned; he held this position continuously for several years and, in fact, most of the time until the middle of the nineties. Safely and Staley was dissolved, since which time Mr. Staley has done very little active work at the bar. He spent several years in California, and until three years ago maintained an office at 555 Main street. The last month the deceased has been confined to his rooms at the St. Elmo, which he owned and the past two weeks he had been failing rapidly. He was active in the early affairs of the city, but was a member of no church or secret society; he was one of the ablest attorneys of the county. Old timers remember that for some time in the early days he was an attendant upon the Methodist Sunday School and was the temporary secretary when that organization was formed. So far as can be learned Mr. Staley [line missing] daughter, Mrs. Metta McAbee, of Trinidad, Colo., who was born in Grand Junction, and who has been notified of his death and will arrive here Thursday to take charge of the funeral arrangements. George Bullock, vice president of the Mesa County Bar association heads a committee with Henry Tupper and Samuel N. Wheeler, which will assist in every way necessary in the services. Judge Miller this morning appointed Mayor Cherrington temporary administrator to take charge of the necessary arrangements. (Grand Junction, Colorado Daily Sentinel, May 12, 1920
