Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Scotia Zion Lutheran Church. The Rev. Mark Middendorf will officiate. Burial will be in the Mt. Hope Cemetery at Scotia. Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Lorna Mae was born May 31, 1925, in a sod house in the Horace area of Greeley County to George and Zena (Sautter) Barnes. She received her early education at Fish Creek and graduated from Scotia High School in 1942. While in high school, she took normal training and received her teacher’s certificate. Lorna Mae taught in rural school in Greeley County for three years while continuing her college credits. At that time she also worked in the summers at the Cornhusker Ordnance Plant near Grand Island during World War II. On June 22, 1947, Lorna Mae was united in marriage to Malvin Winter at the Scotia Zion Lutheran Church. The couple settled on the family farm northeast of Scotia, where they farmed and raised their four boys. Lorna Mae worked at the Greeley Care Home as a cook and then as a nurse and medication aide for 13 years. She also cooked at the Greeley Café and Ord Legion Club. In 1985 the couple moved from the farm into Scotia. Malvin passed away on June 12, 2008. Lorna Mae continued to make her home in Scotia until 2010, when she became a resident at Good Samaritan Society in Grand Island. Lorna Mae was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and the Happy Hour Extension Club, and also was a past 4-H Leader. She enjoyed gardening and had a “green thumb.” She also enjoyed traveling, genealogy, photography and sewing, and was an excellent cook. Survivors include four sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald and Kathy of Buffalo, Wyo., Randy and Mary Beth of O’Neill, Dennis and Teresa of Scotia, and Douglas and Debra of Grand Island; 16 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren; several step grandchildren and step great-grandchildren; four sisters, Geneva Edghill and Deloris Thompson, both of Ord, and Mildred Otto and Donna Voyek both of Kearney; one brother, George Barnes of Lincoln; and two sisters-in-law, Thelma Barnes of St. Paul and Rita Tolen of Ord. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Malvin; a great-grandson, Cal Stepanek; and three brothers, Verlin, Louis and Virgil Barnes.
