Evening Call, December 31, 1900: The funeral over the remains of Ansel Payne, the young son of Mr. and Mrs. W.A. Payne, was held from the family residence in South Lead last Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. Solandt of the Congregational church officiating. The remains were followed to their last resting place in South Lead cemetery by a large concourse of friends and relatives. The pall bearers were four of the little fellow's school mates, who paid their respects in a most befitting manner to one who for so long a time had been a playmate and companion, and the taking from their midst one who was loved so well will be deeply mourned not only by the loving parents, but his little playmates will miss his ever smiling countenance in their merry throngs. The demise of Ansel, who had arrived at the age of eleven years, and the only child of the family, is a heart rending blow to the parents, who looked forward to the bright future which was in store for their only child, but alas, the grim reaper of death took from their fireside one who had been born of their happy union, and tends to cast a gloom over their home which only a few days ago was filled with bright futures and merriment. Payne after a long illness of several years duration. The immediate cause of death seemed to be heart trouble. Lead Daily Tribune, Sunday, December 30, 1900, page 3: Funeral of Ansyl Payne The funeral of Ansyl, the only son of Mr. and Mrs. W.A. Payne, took place on Saturday afternoon from the residence on South Mill Street. The little fellow had been an invalid for years, being afflicted with organic heart trouble, and though tenderly cared for by the fond parents with the hope that they might rear him, his spirit has at length fled, and they are left heartbroken. The sympathy of the entire community goes out to them in their bereavement. The 1900 U.S. Census finds, Louis A. Payne, age 12, residing on Sawyer Street in Lead with his parents, William A. and Susan O. Payne. The record notes that he was born in April of 1888 in Nebraska and was attending school at the time of the census. His father, William, was working as a blacksmith.
