A short time after his birth, he, with his parents, Charles and Alma King, and his two older brothers, Raymond and Gaylord King, moved to Kansas and settled in the Bethel community, where he grew to manhood. As a boy, he was artistically inclined, was a great lover of music, and was himself a good singer. He excelled in many things. As a farmer and stockman, few could outrank him. He was good at carpentry, was no mean veterinarian, and was a splendid mason. While a young man he was wedded to Alice E. Gregg, and to that union were born four children, who mourn his loss. Millie Bayliss of Carbondale, Kansas, Charles George King of Lamar, Colo., Lois Evelyn Derickson, Norfolk, Va., and Louis Frank King, with the U.S. Army in the Middle East. He also leaves his brother, G.R. King of Delphos, Kansas, besides a host of other relatives and friends. Many and varied have been his occupations during an eventual life, and he failed in none of them. Life for him has not been easy, it has been filled with many sorrows and disappointments, and like "ships that pass in the night" --- he has come, mingled with us a moment, and is now gone the way of the earth. A funeral service was held in the Lott and Stine Funeral Parlors, Glasco, on Saturday, September 4, at 3:00 p.m., Rev. R.R. Braddick officiating. Interment was made in the Bethel cemetery. (Lou) King of Glasco fatally shot his estranged wife, Lois Grounds King, Friday morning in the kitchen of the Boyd Café which she managed at Glasco then committed suicide. Mrs. King's death was almost instantaneous. She was shot once through the heart, the bullet passing through her body and striking a nearby refrigerator. The slug was found on the floor a short distance from the refrigerator. It is not definitely known whether Mr. King turned the gun on himself while he stood in the kitchen or not, but he was found face downward about six feet behind the café building. He had shot himself twice, one slug entering the body near the breastbone and the other in the heart. Dr. W.B. Newton was called and said Mr. King lived about 40 minutes. Mr. King went to the café shortly before 8 o'clock that morning and attempted to talk to his wife, it was said in Glasco. When she refused to talk to him, he gave her a letter he had written about 4 o'clock that morning and she put the letter in the pocket of her apron. The coroner later removed the letter from her body. Mr. King left the café, entered his car and drove away. He returned in about 25 minutes and went to the kitchen where Mrs. King was preparing breakfast for two customers, George Noyles and Jack Johnson. Mrs. Teasley, who is employed at the café, was in the front part of the building, and she said she heard King's gun snap as he tried to fire the first bullet; It did not fire, but a second one did. Mrs. Teasley and the two men ran from the café by way of the front door. A woman in a nearby building was reported to have seen Mr. King come out the east kitchen door and fall to the ground. Mr. King was city marshal of Glasco and was authorized to carry a gun in connection with his duties. However, he sold his own gun in Beloit Thursday, and the gun used in the killings belonged to a friend, Mr. King having borrowed in Thursday. There were five cartridge cases in the pistol when it was found under his body – the one dud, three empties and one full shell. Dr. W.B. Newton, coroner of Glasco, pronounced it a clear case of murder and suicide. The couple had been having domestic trouble and Mrs. King had been living with her sister-in-law, Mrs. Kathryn King, the past few days. Mrs. King was in Concordia on Thursday and consulted a lawyer about filling proceedings for divorce. The King family has been prominent in the Glasco neighborhood since pioneer days.
