Description	:	Son of James "Wentzel" and Josephine Heble Unick, was born near Iowa City, Iowa, July 1, 1872. James died in 1877 and Josephine came to Buffalo County, Nebraska in 1879 to homestead land in Section 18, of Loup Township. Louis stayed in Iowa with a brother until he was 11 at which time he came by train to live with his mother in a two room sod house. Louis attended Pleasant Valley School the first year and then Prairie Bell which was a dugout with a sod front. This school was the center of social life... Read More	Son of James "Wentzel" and Josephine Heble Unick, was born near Iowa City, Iowa, July 1, 1872. James died in 1877 and Josephine came to Buffalo County, Nebraska in 1879 to homestead land in Section 18, of Loup Township. Louis stayed in Iowa with a brother until he was 11 at which time he came by train to live with his mother in a two room sod house. Louis attended Pleasant Valley School the first year and then Prairie Bell which was a dugout with a sod front. This school was the center of social life on the prairie. In the 1890's the family tried living in the Cherokee Strip in Oklahoma but soon returned to Nebraska. On October 21, 1899 Louis married Bertha Geisler, daughter of Ben and Bertha Schultz Geisler. Seven children were born to this marriage: Josie, Benjamin, Fred, Louis, James, Elsie, and Roseanne. Bertha died November 14, 1921 and is buried in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery. A few years later Louis retired and moved to Kearney with the four younger children. He married Josie Theil in 1924 and she died in 1943, soon after that he moved to Pleasanton. Louis was a farmer and lived in Buffalo County when homes were made of sod and one walked to Kearney, a two day journey, to get supplies. He helped plow the prairie to plant the first crops, many times they only had corn stalks for fuel. Louis died July 6, 1969 at the age of 97 years & six days.
