Camper Answers Call. Died at Family Home on Fifth Street Yesterday After a Long Illness. A resident of California since 1852 and for the past twenty years was prominent in Chico business life. After several months of intense suffering death yesterday afternoon mercifully intervened and removed form a life of useful activity one of Chico’s old and highly respected citizens. Surrounded by loving relatives to whom the parting was none the less sad because of its having been anticipated, Louis Shanks Camper passed to his reward. Mr. Camper was stricken with paralysis about four months ago and had since then been confined to his home, gradually sinking, but at the same time suffering intensely. The best of medical attendance and nursing failed to alleviate his pain, which continued until shortly before his death. Louis Shanks Camper was born at Queen Castle [sic] Virginia, December 25, 1832, and was consequently nearly 72 years of age. When a child of two years his parents removed to South Bend, Indiana, and here his school days were spent, he numbering among his early associates and school fellows the Studebaker brothers, Schuyler Colfax, and the late H.S. Crocker. Here also he learned the machinist trade in the Briggs foundry, which he worked at until 1852, when he joined a train bound for the land of gold, and came to the Pacific Coast by the Platte river route. The train was over three months on the way and during the journey was beset with much trouble from the Indiana, through which, however, they safely passed, but lost much of their stock at the hands of white horse thieves. Shortly after his arrival in California, Mr. Camper settled at Indiana Ranch, Yuba county, where he followed mining and blacksmithing until 1884, when he moved to Chico, which had since been his home. In company with his brother, H.W. Camper, he was interested in the firm of Camper Bros., at the Junction, until about five years ago. In 1856 he was married to Miss Rebecca Reed, whose family lived near Clear Creek in Butte county, and to them were born twelve children, eight girls and four boys, nine of whom are living. Mrs. Camper was called from earthly cares in 1875. Deceased leaves a brother, H.W. Camper, and sister, Mrs. Isaiah Ashcraft, in Chico, and a brother, James Camper, and sister, Mrs. Addie Steadman, in South Bend, Indiana, and the following children: Luella and Ella, Fred and C.H. Camper of Chico; Mrs. Ollie Tuck and Mrs. Judson Albright, also of this city; Mrs. F.W. Durgin of Altaville, Calaveras county, F.L. Camper of Forbestown, Butte county, and Wm. R. Camper of Washington, Nevada county. In politics Mr. Camper was an ardent Republican, and in his earlier years held the offices of deputy sheriff and constable in the mountains of Yuba county, and was also justice of the peace for fourteen years at Fossil Bar in that county. Mr. Camper was essentially a family man and devoted the best energies of his life toward making his children of honor and worth in the world, and during his life in Chico each year at Thanksgiving and Christmas gathered all the members who could be there around the family hearthstone and made these events one of family reunion. In his dealings with his fellow man high ideals of honor and justice particularly marked his daily life and in his death he leaves to his children the heritage of an honorable record. The funeral will take place Saturday (tomorrow) at 10 o’clock, from the home at 1405 Fifth street, and will be conducted by Rev. Willsie Martin of the Frist Methodist Church. Interment will be had in Chico cemetery.
