Mrs. Housman (sic) was born in Union County, Ohio, August 14, 1836, and was one of a family of seven children. They have all passed on, with the probable exception of one sister in Missouri. On October 2, 1856 (Leeburg, Union Co, OH), she became the wife of Wm. T Houseman (sic), Rev. John Longstaff officiating. Several years later our Nation's very life was threatened. Mr. Houseman (sic) joined the boys in blue and fought in many important battles, chiefly of which was Vicksburg. For four months he suffered the horrors of Libby Prison. He served nearly four years in the ranks until the revolution was crushed. During these years, Mrs. Houseman (sic) had battles to fight at home for the necessities of life for herself and the children that already blessed the home, besides suffering the anxiety she felt for her husband during those perilous years. After the war they felt the call of the west, migrating first to Iowa in 1870, then in July, 1873 to Howard County, Nebraska, where they took up a homestead 4 1/2 miles northwest of Cushing. Here they fought the grasshoppers, drought, and heat of summer, the cold and extreme blizzards of winter as a price of building up a home on the frontier. Twenty-eight years ago they moved to Elba where she has lived ever since. Her life's companion died 14 years ago, since which time she has kept house for her son, Frank, to whom she was greatly devoted. It is thought she was a member of the United Bretheren church in Ohio, and she helped to establish this organization when it existed and services were held east of the river. At her death she was the oldest member of the U.B. church at Elba and lived a consistent Christian life. Mrs. Houseman (sic) was a devoted wife, and mother, a kind friend and good neighbor and took an active part in the community life until she became crippled and was unable to get about freely. When she and her good husband celebrated their golden wedding 21 years ago it was a gala occasion for the whole neighborhood who gathered to do them honor. Of the eight children born to Mr. and Mrs. Houseman (sic), six survived: Mary E., wife of Levi Mohler of Cushing; Leona (Liona), wife of W. (William) W. Boyde (Boyd), of Kansas; Maggie, wife of Byron Baker, of Weeping Water, Nebraska; Harriet, wife of (James) Henderson Gourley, of Elba; also John, whereabouts unknown; and Frank, at home. She also leaves 39 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and 2 great great grandchildren, besides a host of friends who will miss her greatly. As she has gently fallen asleep in Christ, may she awake in the Glory His Presence. The funeral services were held at the U.B. church in Elba, which was beautifully decorated with blooming plants, Rev. Harnish preaching the funeral sermon. The casket was covered with beautiful flowers which testified in their lovely way of the love and respect in which she was held. The pall bearers were all old friends and neighbors: Messrs. E.W. Bradley, Henry Ingerle, Anton Spilinek, Hans Reich, Charley Alexander, and Abe Estabrook of Wolbach performing that duty for their respected friend. Relatives and friends from a distance to attend the funeral were Mr. and Mrs Levi Mohler and daughter, Mrs. Hathaway and children of Cushing, Bryon Baker and sons, Robert and Sam, and Miss Elvira Baker of Weeping Water, Mrs. Nichols and son, Orville of St. Paul, Abe Estabrook and son-in-law, George Bussell of Wolbach, and Mrs George Alexander and daughters of St. Paul.
