Description	:	At age 22, on 16-Sep-1872, Lovel started on a trapping expedition to Minnesota. His journal tells of his adventures there, and of heading south to Sioux City, IA on 21-Apr-1873. From there, he went to nearby Centerville, and on 4-Sep-1873 homesteaded nearby (in Meckling, in Dakota Territories's southeastern corner). On 21-Aug-1874, he signed a contract to operate Andrew Baker's farm near Vermillion, SD. Andrew, a "Justice of the Peace" officiated Lovel's 8-Oct-1874 wedding to his daughter, Mary Ann Baker (a week before her 14th birthday). The next morning, Andrew took his family to Clark County, Illinois, where his wife Martha's parents lived. Andrew and family returned in the spring of 1875, and Andrew ran a blacksmith shop in Yankton, SD. In 1876, Mary Ann's first child, Annie, died at birth, so Lovel and Mary Ann then also moved to Yankton. There, Andrew taught Lovel the blacksmith trade, and Mary Ann gave birth to ROSA Evalina (Gilchrist) and LILLIE Jane (Maggrett). Lovel and family then moved to Springfield, where WALLACE William was born. Then they filed a claim on land in Charles Mix County, SD., where nine more children were born: ETHEL Lenora (Riffle), ALBERT Levi, MYRTLE Minnie (Hitzing), NELLIE Thankful (McRae), JAMES Lovel, OLIVE Mary (Johnson), GEORGE Washington (Sr.), CHARLES Carmi, and SAMUEL Leeper. On November 2, 1889, South Dakota was granted statehood. Lovel died in 1907, four years after Samuel's birth. Descendants of Lovel and Mary Ann Fish include 12 children, 58 grandchildren, 175 great-grandchildren and more than 200 great-great-grandchildren.
