He was born March 7, 1931, in Napoleon, Ohio, and lived in this northwest Ohio community for most of his life. He was the youngest of five sons born to Ina and Carl Rausch. At an early age, he was nicknamed "Pete" by his older brothers and during most of his 79 years, he was simply called "Pete" by everyone he knew. In 1949, he graduated from Napoleon High School. Upon graduation he went to work for his father, Carl, at CF Rausch and Sons-Roofing and Sheet Metal for one year; while there he worked alongside his brothers, Burdette, Russell, James and Paul. In 1950, he joined the Ohio National Guard for a six-year commitment. Within a year of his enlistment, he and his fellow Ohio guardsmen were called to active duty during the Korean War as part of the U.S. Army National Guard. Lowell then spent two years in active duty and was stationed at Camp Polk, Louisiana, and Fort Knox, Kentucky. During active duty, he served his nation as a supply sergeant assigned to the 148th Infantry Heavy Mortar Company as part of the 37th Infantry Division. He was released from active duty to his home post and returned to Napoleon in the fall of 1952. Prior to his deployment, he married Marilyn E. Saneholtz on February, 17, 1951, at the St. Paul Methodist Church. "Pete and Marilyn," as they were known to friends and family, were high school sweethearts and went on early dates in Pete's well worn pickup truck with a hole in the front floor. Upon his return to Napoleon in 1952, Lowell went to work for four years at the Liberty Lumber and Supply Company in Liberty Center, Ohio. He then joined the Rausch Lumber Company as co-owner in 1958. He co-managed this well known and successful Napoleon business with his brother, Paul, for 20 years. In 1978, he retired from the lumber business for health reasons. While working at Rausch Lumber Company, Lowell developed a reputation for his dedication to high quality customer service. During those years he was responsible for the construction of many homes in the Napoleon area and also oversaw construction of the Napoleon City Hall building. During his 50-plus years following the Korean War, he was a distinguished member of Bert G. Taylor Post 300 of the American Legion. He served as an officer multiple times during his years as a legion member holding the posts of service officer, 3rd vice commander, 1st vice commander. Lowell is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Marilyn, and their four children, Susan (Ken) Cook of Abingdon, Maryland, Michial (Sarah) Rausch of Lake Oswego, Oregon, Barbara (Mike) Ritter of St. Peters, Missouri, and Steven (Jackie) Rausch of Richmond, Texas; and seven grandchildren and one great-grandson. Family and friends may call at the Walker Mortuary, 333 West Main Street, Napoleon, Ohio, from 2-8 p.m. Monday, July 5. Funeral services will be held the next day, Tuesday, July 6, at 11 a.m. in the mortuary. Burial will follow at the Forest Hill Cemetery, where military honors will be accorded by the joint veterans posts of Napoleon.
