Young, 91, of Hummelstown, and formerly of York New Salem, passed away Wednesday, February 12, 2003, in the Community General Osteopathic Hospital, Lower Paxton Township. Born in York New Salem on April 9, 1911, he was the son of the late John H. and Elizabeth Kate Smith. He was co- owner/operator of Young Brothers Well Drilling. He was a 1928 graduate of York High School. He was the first fire chief of the York New Salem Fire Company, having served as chief from 1932 to 1949. He served on the York New Salem Borough Council and its Water Authority. He was a member of St. Jacob's Lutheran Church, York New Salem, where he was a former Deacon and member of the Church Council. He was a life member of the Reliance Fire Company of West York and the Stoverstown Fire Company. He was a founding member of the Brothers of the Bush, which was started in 1976, in celebration of the York New Salem Centennial. He was a member of the Water Well Drillers Association. He was a former member of the Hershey Region Automobile Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, drawing, gardening, collecting bottles, and hunting for arrowheads. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Margaret P. Welcomer Young, whom he married on May 6, 1933; one daughter, JoAnn, wife of Robert B. Smith of Hummelstown; one sister, Sara Nispel of York; three grandchildren, Terry A. Smith and Kathy Jo Smith, both of Hummelstown, Linda A. Smith of Dover; six great-grandchildren, Amanda J. Orfanelli, Jennifer J. Orfanelli, Jarred A. Smith and Scott J. Lebo, all of Hummelstown, Cynthia L. Smith and Christine M. Smith, both of Lakeland, Florida; and one great-great-granddaughter, Haley L. Hixon of Hummelstown. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Perry Young and his twin brother, Roy Young. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, February 18, at 11 a.m., in the St. Jacob's Lutheran Church, 96 George Street, York New Salem, with the Rev. James Emerick and the Rev. John G. Bernheisel, his pastors, officiating. Interment will be in the St. Jacob's Union Cemetery, York New Salem. Friends are invited to call in the church from 10 a.m. until time of the services. Trefz & Bowser Funeral Home, Inc., 114 West Main Street, Hummelstown, PA, is handling the arrangements.
