He was the husband of the late Jessie L. (Reachard) Young. Born April 9, 1911, in York New Salem, a son of the late John and Elizabeth (Smith) Young, he was retired as a partner in Young Brothers Well Drilling Co. Inc., and had been a forest fire warden for 65 years. He was a former mayor of York New Salem and a former Spring Grove School District board member. He was a member of York New Salem Fire Co. for 73 years, and a former assistant scoutmaster in York New Salem. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and a well-known collector of American Indian artifacts. In 1999, he received the Citizen of the Year Award form the Lions Club International. Mr. Young is survived by a son, Darryl R. Young of Dover; four grandchildren; two greatgrandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; a twin brother, Loy E. Young of Hummelstown; and a sister, Sara V. Nisple of York New Salem. He was preceded in death by a brother, Perry E. Young Sr. Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday at Baumeister, Orcutt & Small Mortuaries Inc., Roosevelt and Madison avenues. Burial will be in St. Jacobs Union Cemetery. Visitations will be 7-9 p.m. Monday and 9-10 a.m. Tuesday at the mortuary. Memorial contributions may be made to York New Salem Fire Co., 96 W. George St., York New Salem 17371. Young loved the outdoors. From the time he was a young boy, he could be found wandering the forests of Caledonia and Pine Grove Furnace state parks. Fishing and hunting were his passion. With his death Friday at the age of 91, the forests lost a longtime defender and friend. Young was a forest fire warden in the area for 65 years. His service began when he answered a call for volunteers to respond to fires in the remote areas of the parks in 1932. "Whenever there was a fire it was his responsibility to oversee the fighting of it," his son Darryl Young said. "He felt it was his civic duty." Roy Young's sense of civic duty also extended to the community of New Salem. A lifelong resident of the borough, Young became a charter member of the York New Salem Fire Company in 1929 and re mained active in the fire company for 73 years. He also held a position on the school board of the Spring Grove Area School District during the 1940s. From 1970-77, Young served two terms as mayor of New Salem, overseeing the borough's centennial celebration in 1976 as well as tackling to subject of the sewage system there. Bob Young, a distant cousin of Roy's and former president of the borough council, said of Roy Young's political career: "Like most of us, it just sort of happened. "When you are known in a small community like this, you kind of get roped into it." Despite his commitment to the community, the outdoors continued to hold a special place in Roy's heart. Unable to stay within the confines of a factory and sparked by a need to be outside, Roy Young and his twin brother Loy formed the Young Brothers Well Drilling Co. in 1946. The brothers continued to operate the business until the early 1990s. He just decided he did not like inside work and wanted to be outside, said Darryl. During the course of his life, Roy Young amassed a large collection of Native American arti facts, now in the possession of his son. "It was something he started as a boy," said Darryl.
