Lyle Cecil Baker June 12, 1933 - April 16, 2022 Lt. Colonel Lyle Cecil Baker (USAF Ret) passed away April 16, 2022, in Savannah, Georgia, at the age of 88. He was born June 12, 1933, in Estelline, South Dakota and was raised in Huron, South Dakota, along with his five brothers and two sisters. It was there that he met the love of his life, June Carol Namanny, whom he wed in 1955. Their marriage was a beautiful example to others and a demonstration of true love until June's passing in 2019, and Lyle could not wait until the day he was reunited with June in heaven. They were members of the First United Methodist Church in Rapid City for nearly 60 years, and together they introduced their children and many others to our Lord. Lyle was a master at telling stories, and he enjoyed recalling his exploits to any who would listen. Relatives, friends, and even strangers, could rarely escape an encounter with Lyle without hearing a story or having a spirited discussion about politics or the happenings of the day. His library of stories came mostly from his adventurous youth with his brothers and sisters, his exploits as a hunter, and his distinguished career as an Air Force officer. To hear him talk about his adventures growing up with his brothers, you were often left wondering how they ever survived such adventures. When it came to hunting there was no better hunter than Lyle, or so he would eagerly tell you. He truly loved his time in the outdoors with family and friends. Lt Colonel Baker served as both a navigator and pilot in the United States Air Force, where he flew KC-135 and C-123 airplanes and logged over 700 flight hours during combat missions over Vietnam. He earned numerous awards and accommodations prior to his military retirement in 1973, including the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal three times. He also owned a successful real estate agency and managed the Rapid City chapter of the American Red Cross prior to his final retirement. Lyle is preceded in death by his parents, Fredrick and Florence Baker, his brothers LaMoine, Leonard, and Frederick Jr., and his sisters Florence and Donna. He is survived by his 2 brothers; his 2 children; and his 5 grandchildren. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 27 from 5pm - 7pm at Kirk Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 10:30am on Thursday, April 28 at First United Methodist Church. Burial at 1:30pm at Black Hills National Cemetery, near Sturgis.
