Bihlmeyer was born in Sioux City, Iowa on December 10, 1916, and grew up on a farm near Elk Point, SD. He graduated from Elk Point High School in 1934, and attended the University of South Dakota, graduating in 1938 with a B.A. Degree in Biology. He also completed the ROTC program at the university and received a commission as 2nd Lieutenant of Infantry. He served 20 years of active duty in the United States Army, and retired in 1962 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. During his service, he spent three years in the Alaska and the Aleutian Islands, three years in France and two years in Japan and Korea. During the Korean War, he served as Military Adivisory Officer with the Thailand Battalion, attached to the 1st Calvary Division. He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Star Medal, the Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster and ten service medals. He was also awarded the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the US Army Meritorious Unit Award. The Thailand government awarded him the Order of the White Elephant, Thailand's highest decoration. While in the army, he also graduated from the Infantry School Officer's Advanced Course, The Adjutant Generals School, The Armed Forces Information School and the Command and General Staff College. After retiring from the Army, he undertook graduate studies at the University of South Dakota, graduating with a doctoral degree in psychology. He then joined the faculty of Central Connecticut State University, where he served as a professor of psychology, and later was appointed Chairman of the Psychology Department. He retired from the University in 1981 with the status of Professor Emeritus. Immediately following retirement, he joined the editorial staff of The New Britain Herald, where he worked as a food writer and columnist. In 1987, he retired for the third time, moving to Sun City Center, FL. During this period, he traveled extensively, both in the United States and abroad, and wrote two cook books. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus, and a retired member of Rotary International. He was also a life member of The Retired Officer's Association, and of The University of South Dakota Alumni Association. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon social fraternaity, and Phi Delta Kappa national education honorary fraternity. He was also a member of Psi Chi national honorary psychology fraternity and The American Psychology Association professional group. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America, having served as Cub Master, Scout Master, and District Commissioner. He was an Eagle Scout and an active member of The National Eagle Scout Association. As a boy in South Dakota, he participated in the Lone Scouts, a program for farm boys where a Boy Scout troop was not available. He was the only South Dakota Lone Scout to have been awarded the rank of Eagle Scout. During his life, Mr. Bihlmeyer also was employed at the Department of Commerce in Washington, D.C. He also served as a high school science instructor at West Point, Nebraska, and was a Boy Scout Field Executive headquartered at McCook, Nebraska. Mr. Bihlmeyer was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Marjorie (Robinson) Bihlmeyer. He is survived by his widow, Anne Dixon (Roberts) Bihlmeyer, six sons, Lawrence of Middletown, CT, Earl of Slidell, LA, Richard of Durham, CT, James of Springfield, MO, Robert of Enfield, CT, and John of Wake Forest, NC; and three daughters, Elizabeth Kaplan of Newington, CT, Mary Bihlmeyer of Colchester, CT, and Teresa Blank of Newington CT; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Cemetery: Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 29, 2008 at Bluff View Cemetery, Vermillion, SD.
