Description	:	Civil War Veteran. Residence Wabash, IN; Enlisted on 12/30/1861 as a Captain. On 3/24/1862 he was commissioned into 14th Indiana Light Artillery. He was discharged for promotion on 3/26/1864. On 3/26/1864 he was commissioned into Field & Staff 11th Indiana Cavalry. He was Mustered Out on 9/19/1865. (Subsequent service in regular U.S. Army from 03/06/1867 until 12/31/1870) Civil War era promotions: * Major 3/26/1864 (As of 11th Indiana Cavalry) * Lt Colonel 6/1/1865. Later 1867-1870: Meredith was a Captain and then Major in the 10th Calvary, U.S. Army. One of initial officers of the 10th Cavalry when it was first cavalry organized and fielded in 1866-67 and assigned to guard the Santa Fe Trail. The 9th and 10th Cavalry were the first units after the Civil War organized specifically to recruit and utilize black men. Unfortunately, in its earlier years, ranks were segregated - black enlisted men with white officers. Discrimination in the support was rampant in regard to supplies, materials, horses, and arms distributed to the various Cavalry units in the west with the 9th and 10th always last on the list. Even so, the 9th and 10th achieved admirable records. The 10th became known and is still known as the Buffalo Soldiers. For one brief period, Meredith was in command of Fort Larned (Kansas) which is now well preservd as a National Historic Site under the management of the NPS.
