The family had moved to Illinois from Ohio before 1856 but after 1852. Lucien can also be found in the 1870 and 1880 census listing an age consistent with the 1858 birth. The first use of the 1864 birth year was on his marriage certificate. He married Etta Ganow in 1892. Etta was born in 1874 and was 17 years old at the time of the marriage. On the marriage certificate she said she was 18. Pat claimed the 1864 birth year making him 28 with a ten year age difference. From then on every document uses the 1864 birth year. Even his family thought he was born in 1864 and passed down histories using that date. The inscription on the stone simply repeats a date created by him. --Bill Piper (his great grandson) Biographical Sketch Lucien Edelbert Piper was born on 19 January 1858 in Elmwood, Peoria County, Illinois. He was the seventh of eight children born to John B and Mary Ann (Gregg) Piper. He was known as Lute to his siblings during his early life. The family had left Ohio in the early to mid-1850s and Lucien was the second child born in Illinois. His father, John died in 1861 and he was buried at Aroma Park Cemetery in Kankakee County. The family seems to have been lived in both Kankakee County and Peoria County during the 1860s with records from both places. Probably about 1875 when he was 17, Lucien left home and went to Niantic, Illinois. He was a farm laborer, but eventually he got some land, as well. About 1887 Lucien left Illinois for Nebraska. He seemed to be settled there and doing well by October, 1888. On 19 August 1892 Lucien married Etta Ganow (pronounced “Gain-o” and probably from the French Gayneau) in Sheridan County, Nebraska. Etta was the daughter of Mallow and Susan Saphrona (Parke) Ganow. Lucien and Ettie worked for TC Balch on the 77 Bar Ranch south of Irwin, Cherry County, Nebraska. On 7 November 1894 Lucien filed for a homestead of 160 acres at the end of Gay Lake. Final approval of the homestead came in June, 1900. Lucien and Etta had six children, all boys. They were: Hershel, Ralph, Herbert, Leland, Glen and Melvin. Hershel (1892 – 1895) died of whooping cough at the age of 3. Ralph (1894 – 1918) was drafted during WWI and was killed in combat. Melvin (1906 – 1949) died after serving in the Navy during WWII, probably of cancer (he was a long-time moulder of cast iron parts). The other three lived to old age: Herbert (1895 – 1977); Leland (1898 – 1982); and Glen (1899 – 1991). The boys were all raised on the ranch. Pat prospered and bought more land. WWI came and cattle prices were good. In 1919, following the death of her son, Ralph, Etta (Ganow) Piper passed away. She had been sick for a long time. She was only 44 years old. Lucien (called Pat) continued to ranch but after the war cattle prices plunged. Finally about 1924 Pat sold the ranch. Pat split his time between living in Casper, Wyoming and Nebraska.
