Her memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, August 29 at the First Presbyterian Church in Miller with Rev. Brian Jones officiating. Inurnment will follow at G.A.R. Cemetery of Miller. Lucille was born July 14, 1921, daughter of Gene and Lois (Templeton) Morrison. Lucille grew up on her parents' farm south of St. Lawrence near the Danforth Store. She attended rural school near their home, graduated from Wessington High School in 1939 and earned her teaching degree at Wessington Springs College. Lucille taught rural schools in Hand County including Prairie View School in Spring Lake Township, Sunbeam School in Holden Township, Corrin School in Logan Township, and Pleasant Valley School and Stebbins Schools, both in Pleasant Valley Township. She also taught one year in Brookings County while her husband attended South Dakota State University and continued teaching in Hand Country for five years after she was married. Lucille met John (J.B.) Heilman, Jr. at dances at Pleasant Valley Hall, where her father played as a drummer in Max Hargens' band. Lucille and J.B. were married on December 23, 1944, in her parents' home. After their marriage, they moved to North Carolina where J.B. was stationed at a Marine base until his discharge in 1946 following the end of World War II. They then returned home to J.B's father's farm south of Miller where they engaged in farming. In 1947 they bought the Hi-Way Store. Through the years, Lucille was active and held offices in many groups including American Legion Auxiliary, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, Marine Corp League Auxiliary, First Presbyterian Church Women, Just-a-Mere Extension Club, Meals on Wheels, Hand County Election Board, Republican Women, and Eastern Star. She enjoyed dancing the waltz with J.B., spending time with family, bridge clubs, neighborhood coffees, knitting and crocheting, sewing and baking apple pies. Lucille is survived by her children, Linda (John) Palmer, Billings, MT; Cathy (John) Heilman, Huron; Craig Heilman, Huron; and Douglas Heilman, Miller; five grandchildren: Emily and Jason Palmer, Billings, MT; Christina (Austin) Heilman-Geiger, Driggs, ID; Melissa Heilman, Huron; John Heilman IV, Glendale, AZ; one great-granddaughter, Alena, Huron; five sisters: Ruth Fratzke, Miller; Helen Kramlich, Aberdeen; Roberta Harvey, Miller; Carolyn Gutzmer, Brookings; and many nieces and nephews. Lucille was proceeded in death by her parents; one brother, Vere Morrison; one sister, Lois Jean Yost; one son, John Heilman, III; and her husband, J.B.
