Mr. Hostetter, formerly of Wellsville, died Thursday, March 19, 1998, at the Village Plaza in Ottawa. He was born Dec. 10, 1896, in Wellsville, the son of Albert Dayton and Grace Mae Wingert Hostetter. He graduated from Wellsville High School in 1916 and Kansas University in 1921. Mr. Hostetter, formerly of Wellsville, died Thursday, March 19, 1998, at the Village Plaza in Ottawa. He was born Dec. 10, 1896, in Wellsville, the son of Albert Dayton and Grace Mae Wingert Hostetter. He graduated from Wellsville High School in 1916 and Kansas University in 1921. He attended Ottawa University from 1916-1917. He also took correspondence courses on farming. Mr. Hostetter owned and operated the Hostetter Hardware Store in Wellsville for more than 50 years. He sold the business in 1972. He moved to Ottawa in 1985. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War I. He was a member of the Wellsville American Legion Post 194, a lifetime member of the Wellsville Masonic Lodge No. 408 and the Wellsville Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher and choir member. He served on the board and was a past president of the Wellsville Band for more than 25 years. He also served on the Ransom Memorial Hospital board for many years. He was a life trustee of Ottawa University and received the Ottawa University Distinguished Service Award in 1981. He was a member of the Kansas Baptist Foundation, the Kansas Operations Commission from 1976-1977, Alpha Kappa Psi, and was an honorary member of the Sachem Senior Men's Club of Kansas University. He married Mary Jean Edwards on June 28, 1927, in Danville, Ind. She died Nov. 22, 1993. Survivors include a daughter, Alice Jo Defries, Ottawa; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
