Mrs. Anthony Swindle, one of the pioneer women of the Silver Creek neighborhood in Adams township and a sister of the late Hon. W. H. Norris, passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Bessie Henderson, in this city on Tuesday, Jan. 2, 1923, after a prolonged period of enfeeblement, aged 80 years. Funeral services were held this morning from the home here to the Silver Creek church, the Rev. W. W. Carlton officiating, and burial was made in the cemetery adjoining the church. Born in Ireland in 1842. Lucy Norris was born in County Cork, Ireland, June 19, 1842, a daughter of Thomas and Mary Norris. She came to America at the age of thirteen, spent six years at Stoneham, Mass., and in December 1861, removed to Iowa. Her parents had preceded her to this country, but soon after her arrival they were reunited. On April 9. 1868 she was married to Anthony Swindle and went to live on the Swindle homestead, which was the family home for fifty-four years. Was War Time Wife When Mr. and Mrs. Swindle entered upon married life they encountered the difficulites and privations common to pioneer life, but after a time they found themselves surrounded by the comforts and conveniences of modern farm life. During the Civil War, Mrs. Swindle was called upont to bear the burden of attending to home duties while her husband went to fight for his country, and this immediately after the death of their little son. Seven children born to them grew to maturity - Frank of Independence, Charles of Cleghorn, Anthony of Tacoma, Wash., Dr. Robert Swindle of Chicago, Mrs. Mary Ann Robinson of Ryan, Mrs. Bessie Henderson of Manchester, and William who passed away Sept. 8, 1917. In addition to the children surviving there are two brothers, Benj. Norris of Cedar Rapids and Thos. Norris of Denison. Mr. Swindle died Nov. 1, 1906, and since that time his widow had made her home with Mrs. Henderson. At the age of sixteen she united with the Methodist church of Stoneham, Mass., and had since lived a consecrated Christian life. Her life was truly beautiful, and she trusted implicitly in the guidance and protection of her God. Was Given Loving Care. During the last three years of her life Mrs. Swindle became so greatly enfeebled as to require constant care. This was given to her by the daughter, Mrs. Henderson, with a devotion and self-denial of the most unselfish and unremitting character. Mrs. Swindle concerned herself with few matters outside of her own home. She lived in quiet, happy retirement during the greater part of her life, best content when serving others. For more than a generation the Swindle home at Silver Creek was known far and wide as a center of boundless hospitality, Mrs. Swindle being most happy when contributing to the happiness of others. Never was a more loving or devoted mother, a truer wife or more generous neighbor. Her children revere her memory and her friends can never forget her kindness, goodness and helpfulness. Her reward in the life to come is assured.
