The Emporia Gazette Wednesday, June 14, 1905 Page 3 About The Fawcett Family John Fawcett was born September 24, 1818, in Belmont County, Ohio and was married to Lucy Hyde, August 19, 1842. They came to Kansas in territorial days, locating on a claim just southeast of Emporia in 1857, on what was afterward known as the Jesse Stratton farm. Mr. Fawcett afterward formed a partnership with Gilbert Britton and bought the old mill which used to stand back of the old Normal building. They moved the mill northeast of town on the land now owned by O.L. Davis. The firm of Fawcett & Britton continued in the milling business until after the close of the Civil War, always doing a good business. Mr. Fawcett died February 15, 1876. Lucy Hyde Fawcett was born August 24, 1842, in Ohio. Her father, the late John Hyde, was a soldier in the War of 1812 and was a direct descendant of the English family that once owned Hyde Park in London and for whom the park was named. The Kansas home of the Fawcetts, being located on the old Burlingame Road, was always a stopping place for travelers and no one was ever turned away from the door of Aunt Lucy Fawcett. Her days here were many and her life was the life of a true Christian. She believed in living, every day, as nearly as possible to the Golden Rule. She often related the trials and hardships of the early settlers, but never in a complaining way. One story she told was of how the women did guard duty, following the Quantrill raid in Lawrence in 1863. It was thought the Quantrill band would continue to the southwest and destroy Emporia, at that time the farthest trading post to the southwest. The women armed themselves with axes, pistols and old guns. Mrs. Fawcett marched up and down the road all one night in front of her house, with an old flint-lock on her shoulder - the able bodied men were at that time on the frontier guarding an attack from hostile Indians. Mrs. Fawcett died in the early morning of June 10, 1905, in her 81st year. The funeral was held June 12 at the old home, one and one-half miles northeast of Emporia, on the lawn under the shade of the maple trees planted by her son, Maximilian, thirty-nine years before. The sermon was preached by Rev. W. A. Parker, of the First Christian Church, with music by the Christian church choir. The casket was covered with flowers, tokens of love and respect from neighbors and friends. The interment was made in Maplewood. The pall-bearers were O.L. Davis, Perry Edwards, Captain L.T. Heritage, J.S. Watson, C.F. Ireland and W.E. Bray. The children of John and Lucy were Maximilian, who died in 1892 at Hiands, North Carolina., leaving a wife and three children, who now live in Emporia; Miriam Jane, Lavina, Clarissa and Mary Rebecca, the daughters, are dead, Miriam having been the wife of Captain Henry Pearce and Clarissa of William D. Hunt; John Charles Fawcett, the only remaining child, lives on the old homestead. Maximilian Fawcett enlisted in the Union Army, first in the Second Kansas and later in the Eleventh in Company C, under Captain Heritage. He was wounded at the Battle of Prairie Grove, Arkansas, while bearing Captain Heritage from the field. "I must not close this story without reference to a supper given some of the boys of Company E, by a poor widow, Mrs. Fawcett, the evening before their departure. She said, "Now girls, make everything good and have plenty of it, for it may be a long time before the boys will have anything but army rations to eat." With this company were going Mrs. Fawcett's only son, her son-in-law and her daughter's fiancé, who was killed in Missouri. The people at that little settlement of Emporia laid the dead body of Mrs. Fawcett's daughter in Maplewood cemetery on the day which would have been her wedding day." WPA Writer's Project: The Old Fawcett Place, Section 2, Township 19, Range 11 by Lillian Perry By going three miles northeast of Emporia one comes to some big handsome maple trees which make a driveway for about one-eighth of a mile from the highway for an eight room, shingled, modern home. This is R.F. Hoch's residence, erected several years ago along with barns and sheds for his up-to-date dairy. Only a stone's throw away in the same yard and in sharp contrast to the modern dwelling is an old dilapidated one and one-half story stone house. It is no longer fit for occupancy but in its day must have been one of the show places of the Rinker neighborhood. John Fawcette, the former owner of the old stone house, was born in 1816 in northern Ohio and died in Kansas in 1878. Mrs. Lucy Fawcett, his wife and widow for thirty years and known to the neighbors as "Grandmother" Fawcett, was born in Ohio in 1824. She brought up six children, four grandchildren and buried five of her sons and daughters and four grandchildren before her death in 1905. A spiritualist, she practiced healing by the laying on of hands and massage. The bodies of two daughters were buried in the yard of the Fawcett home and that with the popular belief that "Grandmother" Fawcett "talked with the spirits" probably gave rise to the stories that the old house was haunted. The Fawcetts remained in Ohio until 1857 and then set out to find a new home in the fertile lands opened up for settlement in Kansas. Mr. Fawcett, first pre-empted land on the Cottonwood river and lived there three years, but about 1860-1861 located upon the farm of our sketch which then comprised one hundred and fifty acres. As far as I have been able to determine a small stone house was on the farm at that time, but the Fawcetts built the two front rooms. J. Fawcett and Charles Brittain ran a saw and grist mill on the Neosho river for several years. He was also a stone mason. The stone house has six rooms, three down and three upstairs. It faces the south. Two stairways ascend to the second floor with no connecting door between the front and back rooms which were used by two families, the John Fawcett's in one and the family of the son, Max Fawcett, in the other. The east wall of the front part covers what had been a window in the kitchen, showing that the parts of the old house had been built at different times. The rooms are large and well lighted except the kitchen. There was a small south porch with a door opening into the west room and likewise an east porch. The walls are cracked and spreading and the door and window frames and sashes which were made of black walnut have warped and pulled apart. The cornice has fallen away in places, the floors are worn and shaky and the stairs creaky and unstable. Only the rats scurry about. No doubt the stone in the old house will finally be crushed and used on driveways. The north wall of the house is covered by a lovely giant trumpet vine, said to have been planted by the son, Max Fawcett, after he came back from the Civil War. He likewise set out the maple trees of the long drive. The original farm had been cut up into a number of smaller farms and six or eight families no live on the land which once was the old Fawcett place.
