Lexington was greatly shocked and deeply grieved to learn Tuesday morning that Mrs. Lucy Waddell Preston White, wife of Dr. Reid White, had died in the night at her home on Nelson street from complications. Men heard the sad news while on their way to business in the early morning and everywhere the sincerest sorrow was felt because of the peculiarly sad circumstances that attended her death and ho unexpectedly robbed the home of a devoted wife and mother. Mrs. White was a daughter of Mrs. LUCY W. Preston and the late Rev. Dr. Thomas L. Preston, for many years the beloved pastor of the Lexington Presbyterian church and who died May 28, 1895. She was born in Richmond June 9, 1869, while her father was pastor of the Second Presbyterian church in that city, and there her early girlhood was spent until the family removed to Lexington when Dr. Preston became pastor of the Lexington Presbyterian church in 1883. She was married to Dr. White October 22, 1895, in Lexington, her uncle, Dr. John A. Preston, being the officiating minister. The whole of her married life was spent in Lexington, at the stately old ancestral home of Dr. White, where she reigned with sweet and gentle dignity. Mrs. White was a communicant of the Lexington Presbyterian church and for many years was a member of the choir. She possessed an alto voice of rare sweetness, and her singing has charmed many. Her husband and four children survive, three sons, Thomas Preston, James Jones and Reid White, and one daughter, Lucy Gordon White. Her mother, Mrs. Preston, three sisters, Mrs. Anna Estill Moore, wife of Dr. John W. Moore of Charleston, W. Va.; Miss Sara Lyle Preston and Mrs. Janet Alexander Dickinson of Lexington, and one brother, Mr. John T. L. Preston of Charlotte, N.C, survive. The funeral took place from the home at 5 o'clock this afternoon, conducted by Rev. Dr. Alfred T. Graham. The interment was made in the Lexington cemetery, and her infant was buried with her in the same casket. The greatest profusion of followers, consisting of pillows, crosses, wreaths and other pieces, covered the grave.
