Went into the boarding house business (on Sawyer St.) as soon as she and Hal entered Lead. Ever the source of inspiration and ready cash, Luella sent the $50 for train tickets for her sister's family to move from central Illinois. Aunt Lou, Hal, and a group of Missouri miners entered Lead before 1911 - might have been in a bunch recruited from the Joplin area, replacement labor after the 1910 Homestake lockout. This theory hinges on the sisters' brother, George Cooper, having joined the Pinkerton law force here during that troublesome occasion. Melvina's husband, Wm. O. Bryan, didn't arrive, however, until after his family was settled, tying up loose ends in the Prairie State. To be fair regarding the entry to the Hills, Luella and Melvina suffered from early stages of tuberculosis, the higher elevation and clean air recommended as recuperative. Two daughters by Mr. Weaver, Gladys and Hazel, very pretty children as reported in several sources. Lead Daily Call, July 26, 1918 - Mrs. Hal Crumbliss, aged 41 years, died today at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Robert Mitchell, 615 Sawyer street, Lead. For the past three years she had been in poor health and seven months ago her ailment developed into tuberculosis, which was the direct cause of her death. Up to five years ago Mrs. Crumbliss had been a resident of Lead, but at that time returned to Missouri in search of improved health. She tried Washington and California later, but seemed to obtain little improvement. Last May she returned here from Los Angeles and has been steadily failing since that time. Six weeks ago her husband arrived from Jerome, Ariz., where he had been employed. Deceased was born in Missouri. She leaves besides her husband, two daughters, Mrs. Robert Mitchell of Lead and Miss Hazel Weaver, who came here from Los Angeles when she returned here three months ago. She is also survived by sister Mrs. William Ora Bryan, of Lead, her father, Geo. Cooper, one brother, George (Jr.) and one sister, Rosa, in Oklahoma. Funeral services will take place at the Methodist church Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, Rev. Calfee officiating. Interment will be in South Lead cemetery. The remains have been taken to the Rounsevell undertaking parlors where they will be until the time of the funeral services." Lead Daily Call, July 27, 1918 - "The funeral of the late Mrs. Hal Crumbliss, who died yesterday, will take place from the Lead Methodist church at 2:30 o'clock tomorrow Sunday afternoon, Reverend Calfee officiating. Interment will be made in South Lead cemetery."
