Caven was held at 1 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the Caven home on Big creek. The services were well attended in spite of the severe snow storm and slippery roads, and many followed the remains to their last resting place at the Le Roy cemetery. Rev. L.F. Waring of the Burlington Methodist church preached a splendid funeral sermon and paid a high tribute to the life and character of Mrs. Caven. Rev. Mr. Waring by request sang as a solo The Perfect Day. The male quartet composed of Messrs Hammond, Redmond, Scott and Young sang two selections which were Mrs. Caven's favorites. Miss Joyce Wentz accompanied the songs. Lulu E. Struble was born in Knox county near Fredericktown, Ohio, September 24, 1878 and died at her home on Big creek December 1, 1921 aged forty three years, two months, six days. She with her parents, brothers and sister Jennie came to Kansas in 1885 and located on what is known as the Struble farm near Le Roy, where she grew to womanhood. In September 1898, she was married to John A. Caven and began housekeeping on the Arnett Caven farm on Big creek where she had since made her home. One daughter, Jennie, blessed this union. John's death occurred April 18, 1910. June 4, 1912, she was married to Harry S. Caven, and one daughter, Cora was born to them. In early life she united with the Presbyterian church where she held her membership until the time of her death, also working in the Methodist church at Crotty. She was also a charter member of the Royal Neighbors of Crotty Camp. Mrs. Caven was a woman who was well known and loved in this county and had an unusually large circle of friends as shown by the attention she received during her illness. She was operated on for a sarcoma at Mt. Vernon, Ohio last August. The operation not proving successful, she was taken to the St. Joseph Hospital, Kansas City in September, where her limb was amputated. She began failing shortly after returning home, and all that loving hearts and hands could do, it was of no avail. She leaves to mourn her loss, her husband and two daughters, a brother, Warren Struble, beside a host of other relatives and friends. She was a lover of poems and when discouraged found comfort and inspiration in them. Tennyson's "Crossing the Bar" being her favorite. (transcribed by Judy Mayfield)
