LULU DURSTINE Lulu May Durstine, the daughter of John and Ellen Kirkpatrick was born in Western, Nebraska on July 31, 1886, and departed this life on January 30, 1968, at the Sabetha Community Hospital at the age of 81 years, 5 months and 29 days. At an early age she moved with her family to Iowa, and later they made their home at Hiawatha, Kansas. On April 22, 1906, she was united in marriage to William Durstine who preceded her in death on June 8, 1949. To this union were born two daughters, Donna, Mrs. Wendell Tyler, and Dana, Mrs. Arthur Stevens. Mr. and Mrs. Durstine spent all their married life in Sabetha, where their family and home were their first interests. Mrs. Durstine was a member of the Methodist Church for 58 years, having united with the church in 1910, a charter member of the Daughters of Ruth Sunday School class, and took great pleasure in singing in the choir for more than forty years. She and her life long friend, Belle Haxton, shared their musical talents in singing duets for services in Sabetha and the surrounding communities for many years. Her special pride was in her grandchildren. Their accomplishments brought her great joy and doing something for them was her greatest pleasure. Her door was always open to any of the young people, and her home was the nucleus for many of their activities. Her sudden passing is mourned by her two daughters, their husbands, Wendell and Arthur; four grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. Three brothers, Nicholas, Will and Roy Kirkpatrick, and one sister, Minnie Carmichael preceded her in death. Funeral services were held at Popkess Funeral Home on Thursday afternoon, February 1, conducted by her pastor, Rev. Robert Jones. Interment was in the Sabetha Cemetery.
