She was vibrant, so grateful and a fighter till the end. With her daughters and Jesus near, she could tackle anything & she did. Dedicated, she had enjoyed exceptionally good health, took no medications, loved to exercise & sing and was looking forward to celebrating her 100th birthday with her family & friends. A loyal patriot, Lydia prayed daily for the country she loved so passionately. She made wonderful memories & was admired & loved by all. Lydia was born June 26, 1919 to William and Clara Vorderstrasse on a farm west of Plymouth Nebraska. She was married to Lavern Stumpenhorst on September 29, 1942 and together they moved to Ayr Nebraska and started farming and their family together. They were blessed with three children Vern, Roma and Rachel. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church Blue Hill Nebraska where she served in Ladies Aid, sang in the choir and taught Sunday School. She especially enjoyed teaching young children, gardening, planting and growing flowers. She had a special gift with little ones and anything she touched grew. Lydia affected many lives with her faithful witness of her Lord and Savior whom she loved with all her heart. Her daily motto: “Love & Forgive.” After retirement Lydia and LaVern moved to Colorado to be near their daughters and to fulfill a lifelong dream of living in the mountains. She became active in her church and helped her many neighbors in need. She was a loving, caring wife of 62 years. After her husband’s passing, she moved to Centennial Towers in Montrose Colorado where she spent the next 16 years with her wonderful neighbors who became like family. Her sister Selma Krueger joined her for the last six years. They enjoyed many happy memories. Lydia was preceded in death by her husband, parents, two brothers, five sisters, son Vern Stumpenhorst and granddaughter Tammy Dunbar. She is survived by her daughters Rachel Rolfes of Lakewood, Colorado and Roma Bovard of Ava, Missouri; son-in-law Larry Bovard of Montrose, Colorado; daughters-in-law Penny Stumpenhorst of Grand Island, Nebraska and Carolyn Fabian of Decatur Illinois; five grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandsons; and two special cousins: Marlyce Brown and Carol Krueger; and many nieces, nephews and friends. Her service and celebration of life will be held on June 24, 2019 at 2 p.m. at her home church Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 2100 Wadsworth Blvd., Lakewood, Colorado 80214. ALL are welcome to attend and to bring favorite stories of remembrance. RSVPs helpful. Graveside burial service & reception will be held in Blue Hill Nebraska at Trinity Lutheran Church at a later date in July. Also included in remembrance is Lydia’s sister Selma Krueger.
