Description	:	Lyle Channing Baird was born April 17, 1891, in Malvern, Mills County, Iowa, the son of Channing Chauncey and Nellie Kate (Bunnell) Baird. Lyle served during World War I and was stationed in France where he became a licensed embalmer. Lyle married Verda Mae Huston on June 30, 1920, in Brock, Nemaha County, Nebraska. Read More	Lyle Channing Baird was born April 17, 1891, in Malvern, Mills County, Iowa, the son of Channing Chauncey and Nellie Kate (Bunnell) Baird. Lyle served during World War I and was stationed in France where he became a licensed embalmer. Lyle married Verda Mae Huston on June 30, 1920, in Brock, Nemaha County, Nebraska. Verda was born May 20, 1894, in Brock, Nemaha County, Nebraska, the daughter of Charles Edwin and Mary Louise (Bailey) Huston. They had the following children: 1. Phyllis Jean (Baird) Applegate (1923-1975) 2. Leila Mae Baird (1929-1989) According to a newspaper article in 1922 about his career: After the war he moved to La Junta, Colorado where he worked as an embalmer. From La Junta he moved to Blair, Nebraska where he managed the business of J. E. Campbell. Lyle would go on to buy out his partners and change the name of Evans Hardware Store and Mortuary to Baird Funeral Home which he operated until retirement.. Verda died December 1, 1951, in Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri. Lyle died February 11, 1958, in Eureka, Greenwood County, Kansas. They were both buried in the Greenwood cemetery in Eureka, Greenwood County, Kansas. Following is Lyle's obituary: Lyle C. Baird Dies Following Prolonged Illness Lyle C. Baird, prominent Eureka businessman, died at the Greenwood County Hospital Tuesday following a prolonged illness of several years. Mr. Baird moved to Eureka in 1922 and became engaged in the furniture and mortuary business. He was very active in civic and business affairs and added much to the development and progress of Eureka. He was a member of the board of directors of the Eureka Federal Savings & Loan association. Mr. Baird established the Home Furnishing Company in July 1926. He operated this business in three locations, making his final move to the present location of the Home Furnishing Co., now owned by Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Jacobs. Mr. Baird bought the building, installed a new front and completely remodeled and redecorated the interior. In 1934, he built the Baird Funeral Home at the corner of Second and Oak streets. He sold the Home Furnishing Co., to Mr. and Mrs. Jacobs in 1945. The Baird Funeral Home was sold to Elmer C. Wedelin in 1950. After retiring form the furniture and mortuary business, Mr. Baird built the Eureka Motel, one of the most costly and elaborate building enterprises in Eureka at the time. After his health failed, he sold the Motel. He was a veteran of World War I and served as a sergeant in the Medical Corps in France. He was preceded in death by his wife, Verda Mae Baird, in December 1951. Mr. Baird is survived by two daughters, Leila Mae Baird of Eureka who owns and operates the Travelers Motel, and Mrs. Harry Applegate of Washington, D. C. Also surviving are two brothers, Clyde Baird of Omaha and Lowell Baird of Portland, Oregon; and four sisters, Gladys Baird of Lincoln, Nebr.; Violet Baird of Milwaukee, Wisc.; Mrs. Nella Benson of Sidney, Ia.; and Mrs. Murial Foster of Plainview, Nebr. He was preceded in death by one sister and three brothers. Funeral service will be held from the Baird Funeral Home Friday, February 14, at 2:00 p.m. Entombment will be in Greenwood Abbey.
