Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 5, at Church of the Nativity in Sioux City, with Monsignor Michael Sernett officiating and the Rev. Robert Gralapp and the Rev. Madeline was born on Dec. 7, 1921, in Akron, Iowa, to Lawrence and Catherine (McManaman) Gale. She graduated from Akron High School and then attended Westmar College in Le Mars, Iowa. She married Richard F. Burke on July 14, 1947 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Akron. He died on Feb. 22, 1997. Madeline was an active member of Nativity Catholic Church in Sioux City until her move to Charlotte, N.C., in 2003. Church activities included working on the funeral committee, making rosaries and bringing communion to the sick and homebound. She was a member of the Parish Guild, Confraternity of Christian Mothers, Carmel Guild and the Catholic Daughters of America Ave Maria Court. She also volunteered at the Bargain Center and the Soup Kitchen. Madeline joined St. Matthew Catholic Church upon her move to Charlotte. She was a member of STARS and the Rosary Club. She also enjoyed many activities while a resident at the Dorchester. She loved spending time with family and friends. Madeline is survived by two sons, Pat of Mission, Texas, and Tom of West Palm Beach, Fla.; a daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Tom Van Dyke of Waxhaw, N.C.; six grandchildren, Brian Burke and Julie Meyer, Jason and Jeff Van Dyke, Amanda and Joao Pires and Angela Burke; four great grandchildren; one sister, Gertrude DiMascio of El Monte, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews. Madeline was preceded in death by her husband, Richard; son, Daniel; an infant daughter, Diane; brothers, Orville, Francis, Matthew, Joseph and Donald Gale; and sisters, Agnes Gale, Marcella Pick and Eileen Gibeau.
