Description	:	Funeral services for Mae Josephine Bergan, 75, were held Wednesday at St. Joseph's Church, Elkader, at 10:30 a.m. Msgr. Francis Friedl officiated. Darlene Dittmer, organist, accompanied the vocalists, Jean Hall, Terry Leonard, Jane Griffith and Darlene Koster. Altar boys were great-nephews; Brad, Kevin, Patrick and Terry Bergan. Interment in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Volga, was officiated by Rev. B.J. Kalb. Nephews of the deceased served as pallbearers: Kenneth Bergan, Edgewood; Joe, Michael and Bernard Bergan, Michael Roach, Elkader, and Howard Landas, Fayette. Mae Josephine was born May 29, 1905 at Volga, the oldest child and only daughter of Thomas F. Bergan and Julia Anne Shea Bergan. She was educated in the Volga public school and lived with her parents in the Volga area until the death of her father in 1938. She suffered poor health from early childhood and so was cared for in various nursing facilities following her father's death. Mae's death occurred Monday, Feb, 23, 1981, at the great River Care Center, McGregor, where she had been a resident since January 1976. Her mother preceded her in 1957. During the years, Mae, a single person, had a talent for composing poetry and rhymes, playing the piano, sewing and embroidery work. Besides her parents, she was preceded by four brothers: John A., Thomas J., Harold and Leo P. Bergan. She is survived by three sisters-in-law: Mrs. William Bjerke, Elkader; Mrs. Thelma Bergan, Cedar Falls; Mrs. Anna Bergan, Strawberry Point, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Relatives and friends from West Union, Edgewood, Elkader, Strawberry Point, Fayette, Wadena and Volga were present at the final rites.
