Description	:	Magdalena (Marty) A. Kyte, 88, died Thursday, March 23, 2006, at Avera Prince of Peace Retirement Community, Sioux Falls. Marty Schmidt was born June 5, 1917 in Parkston to Fredrick and Catherine (Boehmer) Schmidt. Marty grew up on a farm near Harold, in a three-room house that she shared with her parents and four older sisters. Kyte, 88, died Thursday, March 23, 2006, at Avera Prince of Peace Retirement Community, Sioux Falls. Marty Schmidt was born June 5, 1917 in Parkston to Fredrick and Catherine (Boehmer) Schmidt. Marty grew up on a farm near Harold, in a three-room house that she shared with her parents and four older sisters. Having grown up during the Depression, Marty would often tell her own children stories of living during those difficult times. One story was of school buses pulling off of the road because of dust that made visibility too poor to drive or when the roads were slippery from grasshoppers and crickets that flew in droves. Marty graduated from Harold High School in 1935 then went to attend Notre Dame Junior College in Mitchell. From 1936-37 Marty taught at Fort Sully, and from 1937-38 at Fielder School, also near Fort Sully. She returned to Notre Dame J.C. in 1938 and graduated in 1939 with her teacher's certificate. After graduation Marty took a teaching position near DeGrey. In 1940 she returned to college at The University of South Dakota and in 1941 completed her undergraduate degree in the School of Education. While attending USD she met her future husband, Leo Kyte. In 1941 Marty began teaching in Lovell, WY, where she taught until 1944. From 1944 to 1946 she taught high school in Las Vegas, NV. On July 30 1946, Marty married Leo Kyte in Thief River Falls, MN. They moved to Burbank where she taught school for one year before starting their family of eight children and raising them on their farm. Leo died April 8, 2000. In 1965 Marty became postmaster in Burbank, a position she held until she retired in 1984. Marty was very proud of her work and the post office and what it meant to the community it served. During her retirement years Marty loved to travel, visit with friends and enjoy her grandchildren. She was active in St. Agnes Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters, VFW Auxiliary, and as a volunteer in many local activities. Marty was preceded in death by her husband, Leo; her parents and her four sisters, Sarah (Andrew) Hoefer, Thief River Falls, MN, Thecla Schmidt, Washington, D.C., Irene Shmidt, Phoenix, AZ, and Bernice Schmidt, Washington, D.C. She is survived by her eight children, Larry (Linda) Kyte, Villa Park, IL, Frank (Janet) Kyte, Arlington Heights, IL, Robert Kyte, Burbank, Raymond Kyte, Tucson, AZ, Kathy (Al) Kerkhove, Omaha, NE, Ann (Gary) Baker, Marysville, MT, Don (Tammy) Kyte, Spencer, IA, and Ben (Chris) Kyte, Sioux Falls. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 27 at St. Agnes Catholic Chuch, Vermillion. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Vermillion Vermillion Plain Talk March 30, 2006
